Seattle’s tech boom blamed for rise in anti-gay attacks

A predominantly gay Seattle neighbourhood has aired concern over rising anti-gay hate crime, with many in the community saying gentrification is driving some of the animosity.

UBC professor Amin Ghaziani, author of a book examining how gentrification and acceptance has dispersed the gay population in many cities, comments, “The fact that hate crime continues to exist actually reinforces why we still need these neighborhoods. It certainly encourages us to pause a bit on the narrative of unqualified celebration and utopia and maybe we can all get along.”
