Outdoor play spaces too safe, says UBC prof

Children’s playgrounds are too safe, says Susan Herrington of UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Herrington surveyed a group of Canadian parents online and 69 per cent of respondents said playgrounds were too safe.

“I’ve been researching children and the way they play in different environments for 20 years,” says Herrington. “I conducted a big study on child care centres in the city of Vancouver and we found that children were actually sort of bored when they went to go play outdoors.”
