Family fun and community camaraderie are on the agenda this weekend as part of Storm the Wall, one of UBC’s most iconic experiences.
For nearly four decades, tens of thousands of UBC students have scaled a 12-foot wall after completing a series of on-campus races that test their endurance.
This year, for the first time, a Community & Kids Festival will be part of the excitement. The festival on Sunday, March 22 will feature:
• UBC alumni and Lululemon community races (swim, sprint, cycle and run, topped off by a climb over the 12-foot wall at the Student Union Building)
• A kids festival featuring games such as hockey and mini-tennis (plus a chance to win a week at a UBC Camps program this summer)
• A free performance by children’s musical act and UBC alumni Bobs and LoLo
• food trucks and beverages
“Students call Storm the Wall the quintessential UBC experience,” says Ashley Howard, managing director of UBC Athletics and Recreation. “This inspiring event captures the core of our athletics and recreation vision – increasing participation, building school spirit and nurturing a strong sense of community.”
Storm the Wall heats and advancements run from Sunday, March 22 to Thursday, March 26. A campus festival, Party at the Plaza, takes place on the final day of the event.
Storm the Wall began in 1979 as the brainchild of Nestor Korchinsky – the “grandfather” of the UBC Intramurals program – who wanted to foster a unique campus endeavor and build community.
Since then, Storm the Wall has grown to become one of the largest intramural gatherings in North America. Last year, 3,500 people on 700 teams participated in the standout event.
