Engineering research team receives funding for innovation in clean technology

A UBC research team led by chemical and biological engineering professor David Wilkinson received $450,000 from Western Economic Diversification Canada towards the commercialization of technologies that will support sustainability in the oil and gas industries. The announcement was made by the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.  Click here for more information.

Mine rescue team gets results with help from Ontario Mine Rescue

A student mine rescue team from the UBC department of mining finished second overall at the 2015 Intercollegiate Mine Emergency Response Development exercise at the Colorado School of Mines. The team travelled to Ontario to train for five days at the Sudbury Mine Rescue Station and received training and instruction from members of the Vale East Mines 2014 Ontario Mine Rescue Provincial championship team. Soil Celebration: 2015 UN International Year of Soil

Kicking off their 2015 workshop series, the UBC Botanical Garden invites the community to learn about safe soils in the city, the importance of soil to food security in B.C. and how soils are sequestering carbon and mitigating climate change.

Speakers will include Douglas Justice, associate director, Botanical Garden; Sean Smukler, assistant professor, Faculty of Land and Food Systems; Gladys Oka, graduate student, Faculty of Land and Food Systems; Kimberley Sutherland, regional agrologist, B.C. Ministry of Agriculture; and Maja Krzic, associate professor, Faculty of Land and Food Systems and Faculty of Forestry.

Health benefits of transit investment

The community is invited to explore the critical link between transit and health at a free panel event on transit’s role in building a livable healthy region, increasing walking and biking, reducing sedentary time in cars, and improving air quality.

Speakers will include Patricia Daly, chief medical health officer and vice president of Public Health for Vancouver Coastal Health Authority; Bob Ransford, director of the Mayor’s Coalition; Anthony Perl, professor of Urban Studies and Political Science at Simon Fraser University; Lawrence Frank, professor at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health and the School of Community and Regional Planning; Jennifer Gardy, assistant professor at UBC’s School of Population and Public Health, and Patrick Condon, professor at UBC’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

Philosophy professor reads from new book: Waking, Dreaming, Being

Philosophy professor Evan Thompson will give a reading from his new book Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy. Thompson is a philosopher of the mind and known for his work on Buddhism and cognitive science. In his book, he combines the latest neuroscience research on sleep, dreaming, and meditation with Indian and Western philosophy of the mind, casting new light on the self and its relation to the brain.
