UBC SailBot team learns how to detect obstacles in upcoming cross-Atlantic voyage

UBC SailBot, the robotic sailing team of computer science and engineering students, is preparing to launch their 5.5 metre long sailboat off the coast of Newfoundland this summer in an attempt to become the first fully autonomous, unmanned vessel to cross the Atlantic. Previous attempts by other teams have resulted in sailboats going missing or capsizing when colliding with debris, icebergs, or other vessels. Learn how civil engineering faculty have been guiding the team with obstacle detection here.
