A Papal document that’s nearly 800 years old has become a valuable teaching and research tool at UBC, thanks to a history instructor’s passion and the university library’s restoration efforts.
The medieval document called a Papal bull, was written in 1245. A legal decree issued in Latin by Pope Innocent IV to the Italian convent of San Michele in Trento, it features the signatures of the Pope and 13 cardinals (including future pope Nicholas III).
The bull is housed in the Rare Books and Special Collections at the UBC Library and has also been digitized. Click here for more information.
Twenty-two teams of fourth-year civil engineering students competed in an annual end-of-term design competition for Granville Island. Students presented their design solutions to members of the industrial community and faculty representatives. This year’s term project focused on the retrofitting and re-purposing of the Granville Island campus of the Emily Carr University of Art + Design. The design ideas ranged from constructing pedestrian bridges to improve connectivity between Granville Island and the sea wall to re-purposing the two main buildings for multi-university collaboration for teaching and promoting the arts.
