2015 President’s Awards for Staff: Call for Nominations

The UBC community is invited to recognize staff members who have made outstanding contributions to UBC by nominating them for the 2015 President’s Service Award for Excellence and the President’s Staff Awards (Vancouver campus).  To nominate and for more information, click here. Nomination deadline is 4 p.m. on March 13, 2015.

President’s Service Award for Excellence
This award is open to staff across UBC with 10 or more years of service. Up to five recipients are selected each year.  The awards are presented during graduation ceremonies, and each recipient receives a medal and $5,000.

President’s Staff Awards (Vancouver)
Open to all staff at the Vancouver campus with three or more years of service, the President’s Staff Awards recognize contributions in the categories below.  Up to 12 recipients are selected each year, and each recipient receives $2,000.

•           Enhancing the UBC Experience (individuals or groups may be nominated)

Liu Institute professor appointed 2015 Leopold Leadership Fellow

Navin Ramankutty, a professor at the Liu Institute for Global Issues and Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability (IRES), is one of 20 North American environmental researchers to receive a Leopold Leadership Fellowship for 2015.  Ramankutty will become part of a network of past fellows and program advisors who are working with leaders to solve society’s most pressing environmental and sustainability challenges.

Ramankutty joined UBC in July 2014 as a professor in Global Food Security and Sustainability at IRES. His research concerns global land use change, focusing on agricultural practice and the implications for environmental change and food security. Click here for more information.

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has new associate dean of funding

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies announces the appointment of Janice Eng to the position of Associate Dean, Funding, effective January 1, 2015. Eng is a professor in the Department of Physical Therapy and director of the Rehabilitation Research Program within UBC’s Faculty of Medicine and the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

She will be responsible for providing academic leadership in graduate student funding, promoting equitable and competitive funding for students, overseeing policy, adjudication, and decision-making for centrally-administered awards and scholarships, liaising with external agencies and donors, promoting student success in award competitions, and supporting programs in their responsibilities related to student financial support.  For more, visit www.grad.ubc.ca.

Engineering student examines better tools to study cancer

Samantha Grist, an electrical and computer engineering PhD candidate, will speak at the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening Conference in February. Her research with Professor Karen Cheung in the Bio Medical Micro Devices Lab has reproduced conditions of hypoxia (where body tissue does not receive enough oxygen to survive) in a microfluidic device. Using this device, researchers can mimic conditions near tumors to better study the effects of cancer treatments.  Click here for more information.

Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race 2015

UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering is hosting the 2015 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) from January 21 to 25 in Kelowna, a student-led national engineering competition. The Vancouver-based UBC team of 30 students from civil, geological, materials and electrical engineering will compete with their sustainable concrete mix design comprising more than 70 per cent post-consumer recycled materials.  Click here for more information.

UBC hosts Western Engineering Competition

More than 250 students from 12 Western Canada universities are gathering for the 30th annual Western Engineering Competition (WEC) at UBC.  One of Canada’s largest student-run engineering competitions, WEC’s ‘community’ themed event brings together participants who share a passion for engineering and design.

SCARP event: Sustainable urban systems

Martino Tran, a Canada Research Chair Tier II Chair candidate in urban systems and sustainable infrastructure planning, will present a public lecture on his research titled “Managing Future Risk and Interdependency for Low Carbon Cities.” Tran is also a postdoctoral fellow at the Environmental Change Institute and an Oxford Martin Fellow in Complexity, Resilience and Risk at the University of Oxford.
