UBC members named to the Order of Canada

UBC members were among six British Columbians named to the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour.  Julio Montaner, director of the B.C. Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, was appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada. Montaner developed an HIV antiretroviral therapy that was adopted by the World Health Organization and the UN AIDS programme in 2000.  B.C. Women’s Hospital and Health Centre anesthesia expert Joanne M. Sullivan Douglas, geography professor emeritus Olav Slaymaker and former senator and honorary degree recipient Jack Austin were named members to the Order.  Click here for more information.

Executive Director, Finance and Operations appointed

The Faculty of Medicine welcomes Michael Shakespeare as Executive Director, Finance and Operations, effective April 1, 2015.  Shakespeare will join the dean’s executive team and will cultivate and foster strategic relationships throughout the faculty, UBC, partner universities, provincial health authorities and other faculty stakeholders.

Shakespeare first joined UBC in 2009 in the treasury department where he was responsible for the university’s short- and long-term cash and debt management as well as on and off campus leasing activity.  In 2012, he relocated to UBC’s Okanagan campus as the Associate Vice-President, Finance and Operations.  Click here for more information.

In memoriam: Verna Huffman Splane, honorary professor of nursing

A public health nurse and policy advocate, Verna Huffman Splane was a pioneer in nursing through her extensive international health and development work with the World Health Organization and the International Council of Nurses.  Splane had worked closely with the UBC School of Nursing in various capacities since the 1970s and was granted the distinction of honorary professor in 2006, a position in which she maintained an active interest until her passing. In 2006, she established the Verna Huffman Splane Global Health Endowment which supports global health education, international projects, and interdisciplinary global health initiatives within the School of Nursing. A service of remembrance will be held on January 18, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at the University Hill Congregation at 6030 Chancellor Boulevard. Computer science professor helps launch 100-year study on Artificial Intelligence

Computer Science professor Alan Mackworth is one of seven leading academic experts to help launch the 100-Year Study on Artificial Intelligence at Stanford University.  The seven experts will form the AI100 standing committee to study and anticipate the long term impact of artificial intelligence on all aspects of life.  Click here for more information.

ECE researchers win two best paper awards

Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) researchers have won two best paper awards for their research on cloud gaming. In their paper titled “Ad-hoc Cloudlet Based Cooperative Cloud Gaming,” FangYuan Chi, Xiaofei Wang, Wei Cai and Professor Victor Leung developed a system that allows users to share downloaded game data with each other.  In the second paper, “Reputation-based Multiplayer Fairness for Ad-hoc Cloudlet-assisted Cloud Gaming System”, Zhen Hong, Wei Cai, Xiaofei Wang and Leung at the WiNMoS lab considered how to fairly share resources in an ad-hoc cloudlet.  Click here for more info.

Second MAGIC I3 challenge welcomes new applicants

The UBC Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre (MAGIC) welcomes applicants to compete in the second MAGIC I3 (idea, innovation and inaugurate) challenge. New applicants can register and submit a two-page business model canvas (a graphic representation/presentation) of an idea here.  Successful participants will be rewarded with a three-month residency in the MAGIC Lab (renewable for another three months) and technical and business support and mentoring to take the innovation and business proposal to the next level. This round is open to the entire UBC community and welcomes applications from graduate students and staff.

An interview with SALA alumnus: How to build a career in urban development

Robert Freedman, a former director of Urban Design for the City of Toronto and graduate of UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, is heading a consulting business advising public and private clients, governments and developers on how to develop cities and neighbourhoods that are economically successful and provide value to their surrounding area. Freedman began his education in arts and law during a time when education programs in urban design didn’t exist.  He explains how his untraditional path led to his career in this interview.

Clinical social worker featured in Parkinson’s Disease Foundation newsletter

Elaine Book, a clinical social worker at the Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre at UBC, is featured in the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation’s winter 2015 issue of its quarterly newsletter, News & Review.  She shares her expertise in an article entitled, “PD Take 3: How Can I Cope with Depression in Parkinson’s?

CTLT offers Teaching in a Blended Learning Environment course

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) is offering a new program for instructors who are teaching in the classroom and are considering moving to a blended environment. Teaching in a Blended Learning Environment (T-BLE) will run for six weeks (January 28-March 18) and will be delivered in a blended format – combination of online and face-to-face sessions.  Previous participants share their T-BLE experience in this article.  Applicants may register for the course here.  Deadline for submission is January 17, 2015.

Registration is now open for the School of Community and Regional Planning’s (SCARP) seventh annual symposium: Contours and Coastlines: [De] Constructing the Pacific Northwest.

Professionals, academics and students are invited to a full day of discussion on planning issues facing the Pacific Northwest (PNW). From evolving trends in indigenous politics and transportation needs, to established issues of climate adaptation and housing affordability, this year’s conference will examine solutions for these challenges facing the region.
