UBC Nursing researcher at national roundtable on safety

Dr. Maura MacPhee presented results from a study at a recent roundtable meeting with Canada’s provincial and territorial health ministers in Banff, Alberta. She was part of a national delegation of leaders from the Canadian Nurses Association and the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. Her report, “Valuing Patient Safety,” emphasizes the importance of accountability and transparency in a safe healthcare system.

Healthcare workers trained to support parents through infant loss

Every year on the 15th of October, B.C. observes Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Nursing professor Dr. Wendy Hall is developing a course that will train healthcare workers to support grieving parents. An important aspect of the training, she says, is teaching healthcare workers to allow parents time with their baby, and to help them create keepsakes.

Atefeh Einafshar, a Mechanical Engineering PhD candidate, won the Best Poster Award at UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering’s Research Day 2014 for her work on “Multi-Satellite Failure Evasion through Colored Petri Net Reconfiguration Modeling.” Click here for more information.

Applied Science Turkey 2K Trot brings in $9,000 for United Way

Engineering student David Slade won the second annual Applied Science Turkey 2K Trot and raised $1,202.48 for the United Way of the Lower Mainland. His donation was matched by UBC President Arvind Gupta and Applied Science Dean Marc Parlange.

The Turkey 2K Trot raised $9,000 for the United Way and brought together 200 students, faculty and staff from across UBC, more than tripling donations and participation from 2013. Click here for more information.

Hive Minds spell their way to victory

UBC Library and the United Way teamed up for the fifth annual Spelling Bee, which took place Oct. 7 at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. The hour-long event culminated in crowning this year’s winning team: UBC Hive Minds, from UBC Press. Click here for more information.

Education alumni recognized for teaching excellence

Tiffany Poirier (BEd, 2006; MEd, 2012) is one of 10 elementary and secondary teachers chosen nationwide to receive the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Excellence. Tiffany is a Challenge Teacher for Gifted Education at Prince Charles Elementary in the Surrey School District. She has written and illustrated a children’s book, presented at TEDxVictoria and the World Gifted Conference, and had her class featured on the CBC.

Scott Ormiston (BEd, 1982) is among 54 teacher recipients of the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Achievement. Scott is an educator in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows and has developed innovative methods for supporting at-risk students. Scott was co-winner of the 2014 UBC Faculty of Education Alumni Teaching Award.

CENES presents “Shifting Walls, Shifting Paradigms”

The Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies is marking the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a free public lecture on Oct. 17 by Skyler Arndt-Briggs, executive director of the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The DEFA centre is the only research centre outside of Germany devoted to East German film. Click here for more info.
