Members from the UBC Creative Writing Program have been nominated for the Writers’ Trust Awards.

For the Rogers Writer’s Trust Fiction Prize, Acting Chair of Creative Writing Steven Galloway is nominated for The Confabulist and alumna K.D. Miller is nominated for All Saints. For the Writer’s Trust Journey Prize, alumna Lori McNulty has been nominated for “Monsoon Season” and alumna Clea Young has been nominated for “Juvenile.”

The Writers’ Trust of Canada was founded by five Canadian authors — Margaret Atwood, Pierre Berton, Graeme Gibson, Margaret Laurence, and David Young — to encourage a flourishing writing community in Canada.  Click here for more information about the announcement and the awards.

Nursing associate professor Leanne Currie and senior instructor Joanne Ricci received awards of excellence from the College of Registered Nurses of B.C. Currie received an award of excellence in research and Ricci received an award of excellence for education. Several UBC Nursing affiliate members and alumni were also honoured for their contributions to nursing education, practice, and research.  Click here for more information.

UBC student Carly Welham is among 49 undergraduate students to receive the 2014 Undergraduate Awards (UA), which recognize the work of the brightest and most innovative undergraduate students around the world.

Welham won in the Cultural Studies category for her work “Selfies’ vs. ‘Sealfies’: Inuit Subsistence Hunting, Food Insecurity, and Animal Rights.” As the overall winner in this category, Welham’s work will be published in the UA 2014 Academic Journal.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this year marks the third anniversary of the Breast Cancer Prevention and Risk Assessment Clinic, a program of the Cancer Prevention Centre that has helped more than 1,000 women in B.C. and across Canada reduce their risk for breast cancer.

The clinic offers free, evidence-based breast cancer prevention sessions in-person and online to all women who are at increased risk or worried about their risk of breast cancer.  A physician’s referral is not required to attend.

The Cancer Prevention Centre is a partnership between UBC and the Canadian Cancer Society.  Click here for more information.

UBC’s Parking Office is running their twice-a-year ‘Food for Fines’ promotion to raise funds for the Alma Mater Society (AMS) Food Bank, an initiative that provides emergency food relief to current UBC students.

Those who pay 50 per cent of their parking tickets (up to $120/2 tickets) will have the remaining 50 per cent of the ticket amount waived and donated to the AMS Food Bank.  Payments must be made in person (or by phone) to the staff at the Parking Access Desk in the UBC Bookstore.  Any additional donations will go towards the food bank.

UBC Parking’s goal is to raise $5,000.  Their next promotion will run in March 2015.  Click here for more information.

The UBC School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) and The Vancouver Sun are hosting a debate between the candidates for Vancouver City Council on the topic of affordable housing in Vancouver.  Candidates from each party will speak on their plan to tackle affordable housing which has been identified as one of the most important issues to Vancouverites.  Candidates will also answer questions posed by a panel of housing experts, as well as members of the public.
