Seven UBC professors elected to Royal Society of Canada

Seven UBC faculty members have been inducted into the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). Five professors have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society, the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the arts, humanities and sciences in Canada. Two have been admitted to RSC’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

The new RSC Fellows from UBC are:

UBC’s new RSC Fellows are among 90 elected by their peers for this year’s induction. UBC’s new RSC scholars are among 91 inducted this year. Formal induction into all RSC categories is scheduled for November in Quebec City. For more info, click here.

Journalism project nominated for Canadian Online Publishing Award

The Graduate School of Journalism International Reporting Program has been nominated for a Canadian Online Publish Award (COPA) for Best Interactive Story for their project “China’s Generation Green.”

UBC journalism students spent a year researching environmental issues in China and the emerging environmental movement– leaders of the next generation who want a cleaner and more sustainable future for themselves and their children. View the multimedia story, China’s Generation Green, online.

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies welcomes new associate dean

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies announces the appointment of Theresa Rogers to the position of Associate Dean, Faculty and Program Development, effective September 1, 2014.

Rogers’s role will focus on promoting and developing opportunities for UBC graduate programs and faculty to achieve excellence in research supervision and graduate education oversight.

A professor in the Faculty of Education’s Department of Language and Literacy Education for more than 14 years, Rogers has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She has served as graduate advisor, deputy head, and acting head of the department, as well as on the graduate councils of the faculty and the university. Read the full story here.

Materials Engineering professor wins 2015 Acta Materialia Gold Medal

Materials Engineering adjunct professor J. David Embury is the winner of the 2015 Acta Materialia Gold Medal Award, a prestigious award in materials science and engineering. Embury is recognized as one of the leaders in education and research related to the fundamental deformation and fracture mechanisms in metals and alloys. Click here for more info.

Celebrate Learning Week 2014

The seventh annual Celebrate Learning Week, held October 25 – November 1, 2014, celebrates teaching and learning opportunities at UBC Vancouver through open lectures, information sessions, student advising activities, poster sessions, workshops and more.

Meet Your Maker: September 24

Learn more about food sustainability and ethical business practices at the Meet Your Maker event put on by UBC Food Services. Chef Rebecca Johnson of Sage Bistro will give a live demo using UBC Farm’s heritage orchard ingredients. Samples and recipes will be given out at information booths by Ethical Bean, Milano Coffee Roaster, Wendels True Foods, SIPSoda Co, Engineers Without Borders, Social Conscience Sport Balls, Hardbite Chips, Happy Planet, Steaz, Guayaki Yerba Mate, Harvest Feast and UBC Farm.

Kinesiology study recruits volunteer instructors

UBC School of Kinesiology’s Group-based physical Activity for Older Adults (GOAL) is recruiting volunteer instructors (65 and older) to lead one-hour exercise sessions for its second and final year of trial. GOAL’s aim is to determine what might increase older adults’ adherence to an exercise program. Group-based physical activity programs for older adults are conducted and tested at three YMCA locations in the Lower Mainland. Click here for more details.
