Professor joins ranks of Canada’s most influential female executives

Janis Sarra, UBC Presidential Distinguished Professor, was named one of this year’s Top 25 Women of Influence by Women of Influence, Inc. The ranking celebrates the accomplishments of Canadian senior executives who have achieved the highest levels of professional success and have made a significant difference in their field.

As a professor of law and director of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, Sarra implemented international initiatives including six international roundtables annually, a program that hosted more than 30 visiting international scholars collaborating with UBC researchers; and a mentoring research program for early-career scholars. Sarra will be profiled with fellow recipients in the winter issue of Women of Influence magazine. For more information, click here.

Tech startup top 10 finalist in BCIC new ventures competition

Aspect Biosystems Ltd., a UBC Engineering-led startup, has been selected as one of the province’s top 10 new ventures in the BC Innovation Council (BCIC) New Ventures Competition. Aspect is creating 3D tissue constructs that provide improved models for drug testing.

Aspect’s management team includes four co-founders from UBC: Electrical and Computer Engineering Associate Professor Konrad Walus, Research Fellow Sam Wadsworth, and Electrical and Computer Engineering graduate students Simon Beyer and Tamer Mohamed, as well as an advisory group of business leaders from Entrepreneurship@UBC. First-year students awarded Schulich Leader scholarships

Incoming first-year students Vivian Tsang and Cheng Xie will receive a combined $140,000 over four years from the Schulich Leader Scholarships program to study at UBC.

Schulich Leader Scholarships recognize and support students across Canada who demonstrate excellence in academics and community leadership and plan to study in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) faculty during their undergraduate degree.

Engineers in Scrubs undergrads win VCHRI competition

Two UBC Engineers in Scrubs (EiS) undergraduates recently won the 1 Minute 1 Slide contest sponsored by the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI). Students present their research projects in one minute with a single PowerPoint slide. Justin Lam’s research compared the quality of holes drilled in artificial bone using a hardware-store power drill, surgical drills, and hand drills. Carly Jones’s research focused on developing the correction methodologies for slipped capital femoral epiphysis, an adolescent hip disorder. Click here for more info.

Terry Project documentary revisits “four pillars”

The Terry Project on CiTR has produced a five-part investigative radio series on Vancouver’s drug plan as its season opener, touching on each of the four “pillars” of the plan — prevention, treatment, harm reduction and enforcement. The series features experts from UBC including Christian Schutz and Chris Richardson. The first episode aired September 4 (click here for podcast).

UBC Nursing Rounds – Health for the World’s Adolescents

Adolescent health expert and UBC nursing professor Elizabeth Saewyc will provide an inside look on the recent World Health Organization (WHO) report “Health for the World’s Adolescents.” The report, released this spring, updates top causes of disability and death worldwide for boys and girls aged 10 to 19, describes social determinants, and offers health systems guidance for promoting the health of adolescents.

Main Mall Harvest Feast

Chefs from UBC and the Alma Mater Society will prepare a sustainable, family-style community dinner on Main Mall using some locally sourced UBC Farm items. White linen, tableware, glassware, and candles will be set for tables of 14 and music will be performed by students from the UBC School of Music. Vegan and vegetarian options will be available and bottles of wine can be purchased (cash only; must be 19+). Please note that the Harvest Feast will take place rain or shine, and no refunds will be given.
