Dean and professor of Land and Food Systems elected Fellow of the Entomological Society of America

Murray B. Isman, a professor of entomology and toxicology and dean of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, has been elected as one of ten new Fellows of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) for 2014. Isman is internationally recognized for his research on the discovery and development of botanical insecticides and antifeedants, and in the areas of insect-plant chemical interactions and insect chemical ecology. He will be recognized during ESA’s 62nd annual meeting held in November in Portland. For more information, visit http://www.entsoc.org.

UBC prof becomes new Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering

Xiaotao (Tony) Bi, a professor in the Dept. of Chemical and Biological Engineering, was one of 49 new Fellows inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering on June 26. Bi has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of fluidization engineering and to clean energy conversion systems, particularly on thermal cracking of heavy oil, thermochemical conversion of forest biomass residues, and animal wastes. He played a key role in incorporating sustainability into engineering training and practice, by developing green engineering, clean energy, and engineering and public policy courses and programs at UBC. Langmann photo albums available for online viewing

UBC Library’s Digitization Centre has digitized two albums from the Uno Langmann Family Collection of B.C. Photographs. The collection, donated by Uno and Dianne Langmann and Uno Langmann Limited, has more than 18,000 rare and unique photographs from the 1850s to the 1970s. The albums include images from an 1867 album called Views in British Columbia with photos by Frederick Dally and images from an early 1900s album created by Armstrong, Morrison, and Co. titled Fraser River Bridge.

Digitization of the collection is ongoing, and more photos will be available for viewing online in coming months. For more, visit the Digitizers’ Blog.
