Folk tales in print thanks to UBC teacher candidates

Folk tales handed down for generations in Ghana are now published in school books thanks to a team of Faculty of Education teacher candidates from UBC’s Okanagan campus. Education students Jessica Bens, Holly Corbett, Meghan Epp, Alisha Hoy, Dorothy Marcy, Stephen MacInnis, and Sara Pereira worked with junior high school students in Bolgatanga to choose, illustrate, and write the folklore for seven storybooks.

The project is part of PhD student Cindy Bourne’s research exploring the design principles of global service-learning projects. Fundraising is under way to ensure that copies of the books become available in the primary schools of Bolgatanga and plans for more books are being developed. Unmanned Aerial Systems team takes flight

The UBC Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) team brings together undergrad students from Engineering, Forestry, Sauder and Science with a passion for autonomous aerial vehicles that can map uncharted territory, take photos and create a digital layout of the area surveyed. The team entered the 2014 UAS competition for the first time using UASs to survey a simulated crop plantation for disaster affected areas and for security monitoring.

Team members spend five to 30 hours a week programming, designing and securing funding to market their aircraft. The team is gearing up for the 2015 Unmanned Aerial Systems Student Team Competition in Quebec next April. Click here for more info.

In partnership with UBC librarians, faculty members and students, the toolkit was developed to support the creation of research assignments and instruction that address students’ information literacy levels and needs.

The toolkit provides faculty with:
• Tips for developing a research assignment that addresses five key information literacy skills
• Resources and tools from UBC Library and other institutions that assist in developing student research skills
• An information literacy assignment checklist that offers a way to assess one’s own assignments
• Examples of assignments that focus on the information literacy skills of emerging academic researchers
