UBC alumni appointed to the Order of Canada

One UBC alumna and three honorary alumni have been appointed to the Order of Canada for 2014. The Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Marcia A. Boyd, C.M., (MA 1974) was named a member of the Order of Canada for her contributions to the field of dentistry and for her stewardship of the profession.

Norman B. Keevil, O.C., O.B.C. (Hon LLD 1993) was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada for his leadership in Canada’s mining industry and for his philanthropy in education and community-building initiatives.

Richard ‘Rick’ V. Mercer, O.C. (Hon DLitt 2010) was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada for his ability to inspire and challenge Canadians through humour, and for his leadership in support of charitable causes.

Shirley M. Tilghman, O.C., (Hon DSc 2002) was appointed an officer of the Order of the Canada for her contributions to molecular biology, for her leadership in university education and for her influential efforts to champion women in science and engineering.

Pharm Sci faculty member wins 2014 Scholar Award from the Michael Smith Foundation

Dr. Mary De Vera from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences has won a 2014 Scholar Award from the Michael Smith Foundation under the category of Health Services Research. Her project is titled “Pharmacoepidemiologic and pharmaceutical outcomes research to improve medication use, adherence, and outcomes in patients with arthritis.” To read more, click here.

Digitizing Aboriginal knowledge: call for submissions by August 1

In support of cultural understanding, education and capacity-building in First Nations communities, the Learning Centre is pleased to announce the third call for applications to its Aboriginal Audio Digitization and Preservation Program (AADPP). The AADPP provides matching funds for equipment and training to convert audio materials on cassette to digital preservation formats. The program also seeks to promote enhanced and appropriate access to these recordings for communities, and where possible, the broader public. Applications must be submitted by August 1, 2014.
