Building Operations receives Canada’s first-ever platinum award for fleet excellence

The Building Operations Department at UBC has been awarded the first platinum rating from E3 Fleet, a national program that recognizes excellence in fleet management and environmental performance.

The Building Operations Department operates 240 vehicles and specialty motorized equipment in carrying out facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for the lands and buildings owned by UBC. Between 2011 and 2013 the department cut greenhouse gas emissions in the fleet by 217 tonnes, or 25 per cent, and increased average fuel efficiency by 16 per cent.

New director of International Baccalaureate Educator Programs appointed

Gary Little joins UBC’s Faculty of Education as director of International Baccalaureate (IB) Educator programs. He will be responsible for international student recruitment, liaising with local and national IB organizations, developing and implementing a strategic plan for UBC’s IB programs and representing UBC’s IB Educator programs locally, nationally and internationally.

Little is a retired associate superintendent who served in the Vancouver School District as a teacher, counselor and administrator for 36 years. He has led IB workshops for school administrators at all levels, developed curricula for district and school-based leaders, served on the Regional Heads’ Representative Committee and the International Heads’ Representative Committee, and is currently one of two Canadian educators on the Regional Council for IB Americas based in the U.S. Click here for more information.

Philosophy professor awarded grant by Swedish Research Council

The Swedish Research Council has awarded a grant of $12 million over ten years to UBC philosophy professor Paul Russell. Russell will spend 50 per cent of his time at Gothenburg throughout the grant period. The aim of the grant is to give Swedish higher education institutions long-term opportunity to attract leading international researchers to Sweden. Click here for more information.

Engineering professor inducted Fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering

Professor Xiaotao Bi of Chemical and Biological Engineering was one of 49 new Fellows inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. The honour was given at a ceremony in Saint John’s during the Academy’s 2014 Annual General Meeting and Symposium. Bi has made scientific and technical research contributions in the field of fluidization and fluid-particle flow systems and bio-energy. Click here for more information.

Engineering announces new department heads and reappointed leaders

Effective July 1, 2014, several UBC Faculty of Applied Science engineering departments have new and renewed leadership.

• Professor Perry Adebar will lead the Department of Civil Engineering
• Associate Professor Scott Dunbar will lead the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering.
• Professor Peter Englezos has been reappointed for a second term as head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
• Professor Daan Maijer has been appointed for a third term as the director of Integrated Engineering.

Adebar, Dunbar and Englezos have been appointed for five-year terms culminating on June 30, 2019. Maijer has been appointed for a three-year term culminating on June 30, 2017.

Nursing alumna named CEO of Community Living B.C.

The Board of Directors of the provincial crown agency Community Living B.C. has named UBC alumna Seonag Macrae (BSN ’86) chief executive officer. Macrae has experience in the health and human services sectors and previously worked at B.C. Children’s Hospital and BCIT. More recently she held roles at the Hospital for Sick Children and Woodgreen Community Services, a social services agency. Click here for more information.

New art on display at Koerner Library

The community is invited to the Koerner Library to view the new artwork on display in the main floor foyer. The works are from a series entitled Sites and Place Names: Vancouver by Canadian photographer Christos Dikeakos.
