NSERC announces funding results for 2014

UBC scientists, engineers and students are among recipients of the awards announced today that comprise the 2014 competition results for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s (NSERC) Discovery Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements, Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, Postgraduate Scholarships, and the Postdoctoral Fellowships.

Researchers across Canada will be sharing more than $340 million from NSERC’s flagship Discovery Grants program. The $78 million in scholarship and fellowship awards support Canada’s best graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

Pharm Sci research team receives new CIHR funding

Larry Lynd, Conor Douglas and their research team at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences were awarded a two-year $235,801 CIHR Partnerships for Health System Improvement grant in partnership with the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. Their project titled “Informing Future Orphan Drug Coverage with Scenario Studies (iFOCUSS)” will assess if the current drug coverage systems and decision-making processes are ensuring sustainable access to orphan drugs for rare diseases.

The grant will allow the team to explore through scenario study methods how such systems and processes will respond to current trends and future challenges relating to medicine, biotechnology, and economic funding arrangements. To read more, click here.

UBC Engineering announces Goldcorp Professor for Women in Engineering

The Faculty of Applied Science announces Sheryl Staub-French, associate professor in civil engineering, as the inaugural holder of the Goldcorp Professorship in Women in Engineering at UBC.

As Goldcorp Professor, Staub-French will lead a targeted recruitment strategy for UBC Engineering that plans to increase the number of women enrolled in its programs from the national average of 20 per cent to close to 50 per cent by 2019. For the 2014-15 academic year, UBC Engineering has already seen an increase in percentage of women students accepting offers for admission from 24.1 to 29.4 per cent – a 22 per cent increase.  Click here for more information.

SCARP prof on Thompson Reuters 2014 Highly Cited researchers list

Professor Lawrence Frank from the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) has been included in the Thompson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers list for 2014.

Over 3,000 researchers earned this distinction by writing the greatest numbers of reports officially designated by Essential Science Indicators as Highly Cited Papers—ranking among the top one per cent most cited for their subject field and year of publication. The list focuses on articles and reviews in science and social sciences journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection during the 11-year period 2002-2012. Click here for more information.

Statistics prof receives gold medal

Statistics professor Jiahua Chen is the recipient of the 2014 Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC). As the highest distinction bestowed by the SSC, the gold medal is awarded to a person who has made outstanding contributions to statistics or probability, either to mathematical developments or in applied work. Heads of EOAS and Microbiology and Immunology appointed

Roger Beckie, an internationally recognized groundwater hydrologist, has been appointed head of the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences. The appointment is effective July 1, 2014. Beckie has taught a wide variety of lecture, lab and field-based geological engineering courses, and has mentored more than 100 undergraduate students, graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.

Applied Science recognizes outstanding staff and faculty

Master of Health Administration student wins Robert Wood Johnson Award

School of Population and Public Health Master of Health Administration student Julie Ho received a 2014 Robert Wood Johnson Award at a ceremony hosted by the Canadian College of Health Leaders and the Canadian Healthcare Association. The award is presented to six emerging health-care professionals in recognition of individual achievement and contributions in the field of health services management. Click here for more.

Nursing students pitch in with Union Gospel Mission’s Summer Connect

As part of the annual Summer Connect event organized by the Union Gospel Mission (UGM), UBC Nursing students joined dozens of service providers on June 18 to help residents of the Downtown Eastside access free services such as legal assistance, pet care and bicycle repair.  The students provided a foot soak and care clinic as well as blood pressure screenings.  The event aims to connect residents with services that they need in one venue. For more info, click here.

New documentary marks final week of suicide exhibition

A 16-minute documentary capturing the making of the Man-Up Against Suicide has been released in its final week of exhibition. The inaugural photo exhibit, led by School of Nursing professor John Oliffe, looks at suicide through the eyes of 25 people who have direct experience with a suicide attempt or contemplation. Also featured are the perspectives of men and women who have lost a loved one to suicide. Click here for more info.
