Digitization Centre joins Flickr Commons

UBC Library’s Digitization Centre was recently welcomed as the latest member of the Flickr Commons, giving the general public better access to the world’s public photography archives.

A resource for students, researchers and historians, the Digitization Centre now reaches an even larger audience by contributing items to Flickr. These images will now be available for Creative Commons use – they are open access, freely shared images. The Digitization Centre joins esteemed members such as the British Library, Vancouver Public Library, the Library of Congress, and several provincial and national archives and libraries.

UBC Library digitizes GVRD maps

A Greater Vancouver land-use map series is now available online thanks to the successful completion of a digitization project by the Library’s Digital Initiatives unit. This series of 596 detailed maps was produced in 1971, 1981 and 1983 by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (now Metro Vancouver) and is held in UBC Library’s Map and Atlas Collection.

The maps, printed in black and white, are used by UBC students in urban planning and geography, and are frequently consulted by the local business community, specifically environmental engineers, site remediation consultants and property development firms.

For more, visit the Library’s Digital Collections site.
