2013 recipients of UBC's Faculty Research Awards

Each spring, the Office of the Vice President Research and International hosts an awards reception to recognize outstanding UBC researchers. Faculty researchers are nominated by their peers. Winners are selected by UBC’s Faculty Research Award Committee, which spans arts and humanities, business, education, applied science, science, and medicine.

Africa Awareness Initiative recognized by Institute of International Education

The Institute of International Education (IIE) has announced the winners of the annual IIE Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education. UBC’s student-run Africa Awareness Initiative received an honourable mention in the category of Internationalizing the Campus. IIE will present the awards at a ceremony in New York City on March 14, 2014.

The Africa Awareness Initiative aims to improve discourse on Africa at UBC by encouraging critical discussions of the continent, the diaspora and its globalization. Since 2002, the initiative has raised awareness about Africa through academic programs and extra-curricular activities. For more information, click here.

Pharm Sci launches medication returns initiative

Unused or old medications (including supplements, natural health products, herbal products, and vitamins) are a health, safety and environmental hazard when stored or disposed improperly. The Pharmacists Clinic at the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences is a registered participant in the B.C. Medications Return Program, and is ready to receive unused or expired medications (at no charge) for safe disposal. Click here for more information.

Watch Canada’s obesity rates change over time

The Cancer Prevention Centre in the UBC School of Population and Public Health has animated the Canadian obesity maps and updated them to include 2012 data. The maps were first published last year in the Canadian Journal of Public Health and were named one of the top ten research stories by the Canadian Cancer Society. Economic consulting networking night for students

UBC students are invited to a panel discussion and networking session with professional economists. The event is put on by oikos Vancouver, a student organization for sustainable economics and management. Panelists include Sylvie Lefebvre, consultant at Pierce Lefebvre Consulting; Maureen Mogambi, transfer pricing manager at KPMG; Susan Mowbray, consulting manager at MNP; Farid Novin, senior representative at Bank of Canada; Brendon Ogmundson, economist at B.C. Real Estate; and Bryan Yu, economist at Central One Credit Union.

U-Hill Elementary School now open

U-Hill Elementary School is now accepting registration for children attending kindergarten to Grade 5 (in September 2014) from throughout the region. Registration is encouraged before March 1, 2014. View the U-Hill Elementary School website for more information.

A community open house will be held Feb. 25 to provide information on the school. Classroom visits will be available Feb. 26 to 27 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Onsite childcare will be available during the open house.

2014 Dialogues on our City's Future

Larry Frank, director of the Health and Community Design Lab at at UBC’s School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), will be presenting a talk titled “Environmental and Health Impacts of Community Design: What are the Tools for creating Co-Benefits?” Frank studies the effects of neighbourhood walkability on travel patterns and sustainability. The talk will be moderated by SCARP director Penny Gurstein.
