Civil engineer honoured by the Engineering Institute of Canada

Civil Engineering professor Tarek Sayed will be inducted as Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada for his contributions to engineering in Canada. World-renowned for his research on road safety analysis and evaluation, Sayed’s work on proactive road safety management is being applied in projects in several countries and is considered by many as the future of road safety analysis. PhD students win $80,000 in awards from Prostate Cancer Canada

Two UBC PhD students have been selected to be among the inaugural recipients of the Prostate Cancer Canada Graduate Studentship Awards. Peter Axerio-Cilies and Philip Edgcumbe will split a total of $80,000 for two research projects with the potential to transform treatment and recovery for prostate cancer survivors. Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to perform UBC graduate’s award-winning composition

UBC alumnus Roydon Tse is the 2014 winner of the Canadian Music Centre Prairies’ Emerging Composers Competition. His winning work Three Musings will be performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 28 as part of the symphony’s New Music Festival. Three Musings has been read by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and will premiere in Australia in September 2014 by the Sydney Contemporary Orchestra.

Tse completed his bachelor in music composition at UBC in 2013 with Dorothy Chang. He is now a master of music student at the University of Toronto. For more information, click here.

UBC alum in leading role of favourite new TV drama

Bachelor of Fine Arts acting alumnus Torrance Coombs‘s new show Reign, in which he has a leading role, has won the Favourite New TV Drama Award at the People’s Choice Awards. Coombs rose to fame as the villainous Thomas Culpepper in Showtime’s popular series The Tudors. Click here for more info.

B.C. legislative history available online

UBC Library, in partnership with the Legislative Library of British Columbia, has digitized the first 10 years (1876-1886) of the British Columbia Sessional Papers. The collection includes maps, voter records, committee reports, proclamations and more; documents cover topics ranging from discussions on Chinese immigration to fisheries records. Explore the collection online at UBC Library’s Digital Collections portal.

Learn about copyright and fair dealing

The new Fair Dealing in Practice page, courtesy of UBC’s Scholarly Communications and Copyright Office, answers questions about copyright and fair dealing requirements. This page addresses the application of the fair dealing requirements to copying in a variety of contexts, including teaching, research and posting in a learning management system. It also deals with musical works and sound recordings, audiovisual works, administrative copying and copying for course packs. Visit UBC’s Copyright site for more information.

2014 Dialogues on our City's Future

Tom Hutton, UBC School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) professor, will be presenting a talk called “Vancouver as a sustainable city” Is this statement Rhetoric or Reality?” Hutton’s research and teaching interests are directed toward theoretical and normative issues of urban and regional change among advanced and transitional societies. The talk will be moderated by SCARP director Penny Gurstein.
