UBC community members named to the Order of Canada

Members of the UBC community have been appointed to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest civilian honours.

English professor Sherrill Grace has been honoured for promoting Canadian culture and identity through her collection of published works of more than 200 papers, 19 books, and co-edited plays about Canadian art, theatre, film, music and literature.

University Marshal and Opera Director Nancy Hermiston is an accomplished opera singer who joined UBC’s School of Music in 1995 and established the UBC Opera Ensemble, which now tours Europe, China and Canada.

Forest ecologist and professor emeritus James Kimmins is recognized for his contributions to the field of ecology and for promoting environmental sustainability in forest management.

Three UBC alumni and two honorary degree recipients were also appointed. Alumnus John Daniel (’97) was appointed for his advancement of open learning and distance education. Surgeon Mortan Doran (’73) was recognized for his efforts to raise awareness of Tourette Syndrome and for his commitment to medical education. Conservationist Juri Peepre (’81) was appointed for his role in protecting the Canadian wilderness. UBC honorary degree recipients Michael Bliss (’07) and Douglas Coupland (’10) were named Members of the Order of Canada. Coupland’s archives are housed in the UBC Library.

Vancouver philanthropist Djavad Mowafaghian was also named a Member of the Order of Canada. Mowafaghian has made significant contributions to UBC and is recognized for his generosity in support of the health, education and well-being of children.

Nursing PhD student and adjunct professor win award of excellence

Nursing PhD student Meaghan Thumath and adjunct professor Brynn Grierson are part of a team that has won an award of excellence from the UBC College of Health Disciplines. This team teaches IHHS 402 HIV Prevention and Care, an intensive summer course that prepares students in the health and human service professions to practice in the field of HIV/AIDS as members of an inter-professional team. Digitizing Aboriginal knowledge

The Learning Centre has announced the second call for applications to the Aboriginal Audio Digitization and Preservation Program (AADPP). Previous and new applicants are encouraged to submit proposals.

This pilot initiative provides grants for B.C. Aboriginal organizations to convert audio cassette tapes to digital formats for preservation and access. Current plans are to offer equipment, training and funding support for four to six projects per year, with applications accepted twice a year.

Applications must be submitted by Feb. 28, 2014. Visit the Indigitization site for details about eligibility, access, guidelines, criteria and more.

UBC hosts free public lecture with BMO Financial Group co-chair

UBC is hosting the latest installment in the Public Policy Forum’s 2013-14 Lecture Series, “The Global Talent Hunt: Are We Playing to Win.” The lecture will be given by Kevin Lynch, co-chair of BMO Financial Group and former clerk of the Privy Council, with welcome remarks by UBC president Stephen Toope. Since 1987, the Public Policy Forum has recognized inspirational leaders who have advance public policy and good governance in Canada.

UBC professor gives Aubrey J. Tingle prize lecture

The Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) and the Vancouver Coastal Research Institute presents a lecture given by Martin Gleave, the recipient of the MSFHR Aubrey J. Tingle prize. The prize is given to a B.C. clinician scientist or scholar practitioner whose work in health research is internationally recognized and has significant impact on advancing clinical or health services and policy research to improve health and the health system in B.C. and globally.

Gleave is executive director of the Vancouver Prostate Centre, chief executive officer of PC-TRIADD, and a distinguished professor in the department of urologic sciences at UBC. His prize lecture is titled “Bridging the Mind to Market Gap in Translational Cancer Research: The Vancouver PC-TRiADD Model.”

Marlee Kline Lecture in Social Justice: I am who you are

UBC’s Faculty of Law presents a lecture honouring the memory of Marlee Gayle Kline, a professor of the Faculty of Law from 1989. Kline died in 2001 after a lengthy and determined struggle with leukemia. She was initially acclaimed for her work on feminist legal theory and critical race theory, child welfare law and policy, law’s continued colonialism and the restructuring of the social welfare state. Bonnie Sherr Klein, the speaker of this lecture, is a documentary filmmaker and long-time activist in the feminist and disability movements.
