In the summer of 2012, UBC nursing student Julie Cinel experienced a myocardial infarction (heart attack) while spending time with her family in Kamloops. She was taken by ambulance to Kelowna where she had an angioplasty resulting in two stents in one of her coronary arteries. During her recovery, Cinel questioned whether she would continue with her nursing studies at UBC. A conversation with a nurse who took care of her and the encouragement of nursing leaders at the UBC School of Nursing helped her make her decision to continue.
Cinel will receive a Master of Science in Nursing during UBC’s fall convocation on November 28. Under the supervision of Prof. Sally Thorne, her thesis looks at nurse anesthetists and the potential role they can play in the health care system. For more on her story, click here.
