Minerva Foundation for B.C. Women celebrates “Women In” Science

The Minerva Foundation for B.C. Women has announced the leading British Columbian women who will be honoured for their impact in the science industry at the eighth annual “Women In™” Science luncheon on Nov. 27. All four honourees are members of the UBC community.

• Community Leadership and Excellence Awards: Dr. Pauline Johnson, Department of Microbiology and Immunology and Lia Merminga, Head of the Accelerator Division for TRIUMF, currently working with the University of Victoria and UBC to launch Canada’s first advanced-degree program in accelerator science and technology.

• Philanthropy or Volunteerism Award: Dr. Carol Lane, clinician neuroscientist and assistant clinical professor in the Division of Clinical Neuroscience, Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine.

Nursing prof short-listed for Premier’s Award of Excellence in Partnership

Nursing professor Susan Dahinten, who led the evaluation research for the first three years of the Fostering Early Development (FED) Program, was recently shortlisted for the Premier’s Award of Excellence in Partnerships. FED conducts developmental screening and follow-up services for children in care who are younger than six years to track health screening and immunizations, and provide training and support for caregivers and staff. Pathology and Laboratory Medicine prof wins Leadership in Quality award

The B.C. Patient Safety and Quality Council’s annual awards program celebrates improvements to the quality of health care and patient safety. This year Dr. Michael Noble, from UBC’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, is the winner of the awards’ Leadership in Quality category. For more on Noble’s achievements, click here.

Adjunct professor Alfred Guenkel has been honoured with the Association for Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (APEGBC) 2013 Meritorious Achievement Award at its annual conference and general meeting in Whistler. For more info, click here.

Inaugural Hanson Lau Graduate Research Scholarship awarded

Department of Educational Studies PhD student Yao Xiao has been awarded the inaugural Hanson Lau Graduate Scholarship. Yao’s research topic, Active Chinese Canadian citizenship and the public pedagogy of pride, explores the political emotion of pride nested within/without Chinese Canadian identities in the City of Richmond, where ethnic minority Chinese have become the majority.

This annual scholarship has been endowed by alumnus Hanson Lau (BA ’70, Education ’71) to provide support for a master’s or doctoral student conducting research into the contributions that Chinese immigrants have made to life in B.C. and Canada. For more information, click here.

Engineering Physics students place fourth in ACM Pacific Northwest Regional

Daniel Lu and Angus Lim placed fourth overall in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Pacific Northwest Regional Contest (International Collegiate Programming). Lu, Lim and Paul Liu (Math/Physics) finished highest of all UBC teams, just behind teams from Berkeley and Stanford. For more info, click here.

Materials Engineering student chapter wins 2013 METSOC award

UBC’s Materials Engineering student chapter has won the Meterological Society (METSOC) Outstanding Student Chapter award for 2013, an award that recognizes the best student chapter in materials engineering in Canada. The award was accepted on behalf of the student chapter by Mina Vafaei, Sophia Chan and Shima Karimi at the annual Conference of Metallurgists Awards banquet on Oct. 28. For more info, click here.

A history of English-language dictionaries

UBC Library’s Rare Books & Special Collections (RBSC) presents a new exhibition exploring how lexicographers of the past built on the work of their predecessors and advanced towards the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The exhibition is free and open to the public, and is on display until Dec. 24 at RBSC, located on Level 1 of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

Assistant Professor Stefan Dollinger will present a brief social history and criticism of the OED on Nov. 15.

"An Inescapable Perspective" at the Learning Centre

The Carl Sagan Association for the Communication of Science, in collaboration with the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, presents “An Inescapable Perpective: Conversations in Science,” a joint art exhibition between departments in the UBC Faculty of Science and local artists, running at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre from Nov. 4 – 25.

An exhibition opening on Nov. 7 will feature presentations from members of the four participating departments followed by a reception.

2013 Marion Woodward Lecture

The 2013 Marion Woodward Lecture presents speaker Josephine Etowa, Associate Professor and Loyer DaSilva Research Chair in Public Health Nursing, School of Nursing, University of Ottawa. Etowa will speak on “Strengthening Leadership in Community Health Nursing and Collaborative Partnerships.”
