Remembrance Day Ceremony at UBC for the community

This year’s Annual Remembrance Day ceremony at UBC will be held on Monday, Nov. 11 in the War Memorial Gym. The ceremony, which often draws more than 1,000 people, will include music provided by the UBC School of Music, short readings and remarks.

Free parking is available up to 1 p.m. in the General Services and Administration Building parking lot beside the War Memorial Gym and at the meters on Wesbrook Drive (from University Boulevard north to the Bus Loop). Parking is also available in the North Parkade at $7.00 for the day.

Zoology prof receives Society for Neuroscience achievement award

Zoology professor Jane Roskams has been recognized by the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) with a Bernice Grafstein Award and $2,000 during its annual meeting, Neuroscience 2013. A renowned expert on neural repair and regeneration, Roskams is recognized for her commitment to student outreach efforts at local elementary and high schools, her dedication to UBC graduate students, and her commitment to the Society for Neuroscience and the International Brain Research Organization. Roskam has pushed to increase the hiring of more women faculty positions at UBC and has worked closely on programs aimed at drawing young women toward careers in the sciences with the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology. UBC prof awarded Governor General medal

Julian Dierkes, Keidanren Chair of Japanese Research at UBC’s Institute of Asian Research, was awarded a Governor General’s Medallion during Governor General David Johnston’s recent state visit to Mongolia (read Dierkes’ account on his blog). UBC Mining Engineering professor Bern Klein was a member of the official delegation that accompanied Johnston. An interview with Bern on the second day of the state visit can be viewed here (1:38).

UBC buildings receive recognition

Building projects at UBC have been honoured at the 2013 Architectural Institute of British Columbia Architectural Awards.

• Faculty of Arts Buchanan Courtyards Renew project by PUBLIC: Architecture + Communication received a Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award – Medal Level
• Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Centre for Drug Research and Development by Saucier + Perrotte / Hughes Condon Marler Architects received a Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture – Merit Level
• UBC’s Boulevard Transit Shelters by PUBLIC: Architecture + Communication received an award for experiential architecture.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences building has also been shortlisted in the Ordres des Architectes du Quebec Prix d’Excellence. Voting is open until Nov. 14 and can be done here.

FPInnovations grants fellowship to UBC professor developing bio-economy strategy for BC

FPInnovations has awarded the FPInnovations Professorship in Pulp and Paper Engineering to James Olson, director of UBC’s Pulp and Paper Centre. Olson is recognized for his leadership in helping to position B.C.’s pulp and paper sector to prosper in the emerging bio-economy. For more info, click here.

Mining Engineering prof honoured at symposium

Mining Engineering Professor Emeritus Janusz Laskowski was honoured at the 50th Symposium Physicochemical Problems of Mineral Processing. Laskiwski organized the first 11 symposia from 1966 to 1980. Materials Engineering professors David Dreisinger and David Dixon also participated in the conference. Click here for more info.

Faculty Pension Plan Trustees Election

The UBC Faculty Pension Plan Election for two Pension Board trustees is now under way. Election packages were mailed to members on Oct. 18, 2013. Plan members can vote by paper ballot or online. For candidate information and to vote online, click here. Voting closes at 4 p.m. P.S.T. on Nov. 12. The results of the election will be posted on the Faculty Pension Plan website on Nov. 19. Tell your UBC colleagues what is cool in your field

UBC News is inviting members of its community to describe, in 100 words, a new development in your field of study that is really cool. Submissions must be made by Nov. 6 at http://news.ubc.ca/nextbigthing/.

It is part of an effort to expand the annual UBC Next Big Thing project. Submissions will be posted, and guest editors David Ng (Michael Smith Laboratories) and Paul Cubbon (Sauder School of Business) will help UBC News choose 10 submissions with game-changing impacts to feature in our 2014 Next Big Thing edition, published in mid-December. Feature stories will be written by volunteer journalism students.

Movember @ Mahony's: Conversations about Men's Mental Health

Nursing professor John Oliffe and colleagues will hold an open forum titled Masculinities and Men’s Depression and Suicide Network, a Movember-funded event about men’s mental health facilitated by UBC faculty, staff and students. Food will be provided and drink specials available. Attendees must be 19 years of age to attend.

Canadian Space Agency Astronaut David Saint-Jacques will give a talk about his training, the journey that led him to become a Canadian astronaut and give an overview of Canadian Space Agency projects and insights on opportunities for students.

Lecture on quantum phenomena: Higgs Boson and beyond

Last year’s experimental discovery of the Higgs Boson culminated a search that spanned almost 50 years since the original theoretical prediction of Higgs, Brout, and Englert (awarded a Nobel Prize in physics this year). This talk will discuss the unique role the Higgs particle plays in the current understanding of the fundamental building blocks of nature, why it remained so elusive, and how it was finally discovered at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.
