UBC professor inducted into American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Zoology professor Michael C. Whitlock was among 164 people inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences at a ceremony on Oct. 12. Founded in 1780, the Academy is an independent research centre that draws from its members’ expertise to conduct studies in science and technology policy, global security, the humanities and culture, social policy, and education. The current membership includes more than 300 Nobel laureates, 100 Pulitzer Prize winners, and celebrated artists and performers. Read more about the new class here.

IPinCH project receives SSHRC Partnership Award

The Intellectual Property Issues in Cultural Heritage (IPinCH) project has been awarded the first Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Partnership Award with $50,000 in funding.

IPinCH promotes a model of collaborative research that empowers and protects indigenous communities while enriching scholarly inquiry. The IPinCH project is based in Simon Fraser University and includes UBC members Susan Rowley, Jennifer Kramer and Solen Roth from the Dept. of Anthropology, Robert Paterson from Faculty of Law, and MA and PhD students Jordan Wilson, Mique’l Icesis Dangeli, Adam Solomonian, Gloria Bell and Marina La Salle. History prof wins SSHRC grant for African film project

History professor Julie MacArthur has won a $20,000 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Connections Grant to fund an African film series project in Vancouver. Macarthur will serve as program director and curator for The New Wave in African Cinema, a film series that will screen 10 feature films and 10 short films in Vancouver from Nov. 1-7. Directors from across Africa will participate in the week-long event that will include workshops and panel discussions.

The series is a joint production of UBC and The Cinematheque, and funded by UBC African Studies, The Cinematheque, Liu Institute for Global Issues, and SSHRC. View full program details here.

Applied Science raises $2,072 for United Way

Faculty of Applied Science’s Dean Marc Parlange thanks everyone in the UBC community who participated in the Turkey 2K Trot fundraiser for UBC’s United Way Campaign on Oct. 8. A total of $2,072 ($1,483 from pledges and $589 matched by the Dean) was raised, with proceeds from the Sigma Phi Delta Fraternity’s BBQ to also be added. For more info, click here.

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences launched the Pharmaceutical Analytical Suite (PSAS), a dedicated facility for research and data acquisition, on Oct. 16. PSAS is located on the fifth and sixth floors of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Building. Click here to read more.

UBC prof featured in CBC’s The Nature of Things

A documentary titled “Brain Magic: The Power of Placebos” will be broadcast on Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. on CBC’s The Nature of Things. The broadcast will feature UBC’s Dr. Jon Stoessl and his research on Parkinson’s and placebos. Click here for a 30-second preview.

SALA remembers Sanford Hirshen

Former director of the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) Sanford Hirshen passed away on Oct. 2 in Oakland, CA. Hirshen served as director from 1990 until his retirement in 2000 and was responsible for initiating the School’s ongoing design-build programs. For more information, click here.

Civil Engineering team wins design competition

A UBC Civil Engineering team won first place at the North American Water Environment Federation Student Design Competition in the Environmental Division. This is the first time a Canadian team has won this event. For more, click here.

Integrated Engineering student runs marathon to end poverty

Third-year Integrated Engineering student Patrick Crawford will be running in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront marathon representing Engineering Without Borders (EWB) Run to End Poverty. EWB is an organization that drives change in Africa and works to solve systemic, systematic, complex realities of poverty in Africa. For more info on EWB, click here.

UBC alumni reach Journey Prize finals

Dept. of English alumni Doretta Lau and Naben Ruthnum are finalists in the Writers’ Trust of Canada / McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. The prize is awarded annually to a new and developing writer for a short story published in a Canadian literary publication. Lau is recognized for her story How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun?, a portrait of adolescent angst and rebellion set among a gang of “dragoons” growing up in Vancouver. Ruthnum is finalist for his story Cinema Rex, a story of a neighbourhood in Mauritius in the 1950s that draws connections between a changing community inundated by Hollywood and three friends transitioning out of boyhood. The winner will be announced at the Writers’ Trust Awards event in Toronto on Nov. 20. For more information, click here.

UBC hosts Gairdner Foundation 2013 National Program Lecture Series

Canada Gairdner Award winners Sir Gregory Winter and Dr. Kim Nasmyth will share their knowledge and expertise in biomedical research at UBC as part of the Gairdner Foundation’s National Program lecture series. Gairdner Award recipients travel from St. John’s to Vancouver, giving lectures and meeting with over 6,000 students at 21 universities.

School of Nursing welcomes global conference on integrative oncology

UBC School of Nursing is welcoming the 10th Annual Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) to Vancouver on Oct. 20-22. The mission of the SIO is to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative healthcare to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. Lynda Balneaves, associate professor in the UBC School of Nursing, is co-chair of the conference and principal investigator of the Complementary Medicine Education and Outcomes Program. Applications open for UBC Library Innovative Dissemination of Research Award

Nominations are open for the UBC Library Innovative Dissemination of Research Award, which honours faculty, staff and students who are expanding the boundaries of research through the creative use of new tools and technologies that enhance research findings. The recipient will receive a framed certificate and $2,000 and will be announced in early spring of 2014. Read more about past recipients and submit your application by Nov. 25.

Open Access Week at UBC

The third-annual Open UBC will kick off Oct. 22, celebrating open access to information. The events encourage the academic community to come together to share and learn about open scholarship initiatives locally and worldwide. Highlights include Paul Stacey from Creative Commons discussing open learning; Peter Binfield, co-founder of the up-and-coming PeerJ; and sessions on open education, from MOOCs to open textbooks.

Create a team for the fourth annual Spelling Bee

UBC Library and the United Way invite UBC staff to the fourth annual Spelling Bee, a cross-campus team competition to raise awareness for the United Way. Teams of four to 10 people can register by noon on Nov. 12.
