Dept. of English alumni Doretta Lau and Naben Ruthnum are finalists in the Writers’ Trust of Canada / McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize. The prize is awarded annually to a new and developing writer for a short story published in a Canadian literary publication. Lau is recognized for her story How Does a Single Blade of Grass Thank the Sun?, a portrait of adolescent angst and rebellion set among a gang of “dragoons” growing up in Vancouver. Ruthnum is finalist for his story Cinema Rex, a story of a neighbourhood in Mauritius in the 1950s that draws connections between a changing community inundated by Hollywood and three friends transitioning out of boyhood.
