Residence Advisors dole out advice over a bowl of Rice Krispies
Why does residence life manager Amy Stewart need 2,000 boxes of cereal for Sept. 1? It’s all part of welcoming 2,000 students into the Marine Drive and Ponderosa Commons residences this fall.
As a Residence Life Manager for these residences, Stewart works closely with residence advisors, students who live alongside their peers acting as a point person, mentor and social coordinator. Together, they make sure that students enjoy a safe living environment and get the chance to be part of a residence community.
Soon after students move in, residence advisors visit each room, welcome students and drop off a box of cereal that comes with a customized label featuring important information about residence life and tips on sharing a living space with a roommate.
The idea is that students will sit down to eat a bowl of cereal and learn a bit more about the place they’ll be calling home for the next eight months to a year. For students living with a roommate, enjoying some cereal together might provide the perfect opportunity to decide on the dos and don’ts of their suite. Last year’s flavour was an appropriately West Coast choice: gluten-free brown Rice Krispies.
