Elizabeth Kenny McCann Scholar initiatives launched

Nursing associate professor Bernie Garrett is the recipient of the 2013-14 Elizabeth Kenny McCann Scholar Award. His two-year program Innovative Practice to Build Pedagogic Expertise in the School of Nursing is designed to provide mentorship and foster and sustain a climate conducive to optimal learning and professional development for students, faculty and alumni.

The new Elizabeth Kenny McCann Educational Research Projects Competition supports small-scale educational research projects in the UBC School of Nursing (to a maximum of $2,000 per project). This competition is open to all UBC School of Nursing faculty, adjunct faculty, and graduate students. For more information, click here.

Engineering educators recognized for dedication to students

School of Engineering associate professor Jonathan Holzman received the Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovation in the junior faculty category. He has not only pioneered the Integrated Optics Laboratory and Applied Micro and Nanosystems Facility at UBC’s Okanagan campus, but has developed curriculum, implemented innovations in teaching and learning, encouraged interdisciplinary approaches to learning, and supported national and global initiatives in electrical engineering.

Within the School of Engineering, associate professor Mina Hoorfar and senior instructor Ray Taheri were recognized with honour roll distinctions. Also recognized for his contributions to educating engineering students was physics instructor Jake Bobowski, now with the UBC Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences. Pharmaceutical Scientists recognized

Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty members Drs. John McNeill and Kishor Wasan, graduate student Andrea Wan, and adjunct professor Dr. Ellen Wasan have been honoured in the 2013 Canadian Society for Pharmaceutical Sciences Awards. To read more click here.

The Pharmaceutical Sciences Building is the winner of the Northwest Wall and Ceiling Bureau Outstanding Projects of the Year 2013 Award for best suspended ceiling. To read more, click here.

The Role of Gender in Science Communication

The Creating Connections conference at UBC on May 10-11 kicks off with a free keynote panel discussion titled “The Role of Gender in Science Communication,” moderated by Jennifer Gardy, senior scientist at B.C. Centre for Disease Control and recurring guest host for the Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel.

The conference brings together over 300 people from across B.C. and the Yukon to encourage a dialogue about the value of diversity and gender diversity to companies and organizations.
