Pop Rocks on campus

An equal collaboration between AFJD Studio (Amber Frid-Jimenez and Joe Dahmen) and Matthew Soules Architecture, Pop Rocks is a temporary installation that covers a block of the UBC Vancouver campus in front of Koerner Library.  Joe Dahmen and Matthew Soules are both UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture professors, and Amber Frid-Jimenez is a professor at Emily Carr University.  The project is fabricated entirely from post-consumer materials from the metropolitan Vancouver region, including recycled polystyrene packaging and fabric from the Canada Place sails. The installation engages tactically with these materials to produce soft forms that provide a comfortable place to socialize, read and relax, fostering unexpected social encounters and new perspectives on the campus.
