The Board of Governors has accepted the President’s recommendation to appoint Professor Michael Coughtrie as the new Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for a five-year term commencing August 1, 2013.

Coughtrie is professor of Biochemical Pharmacology and Operations Director of the Medical Research Institute, located within the Medical School at the University of Dundee, Scotland. He brings a strong commitment to research, teaching and learning through the recruitment and development of faculty and staff, curriculum development and leading key innovative development projects such as establishing and directing the postgraduate training and monitoring system in the Medical School, and leading and overseeing the implementation of a major IT Network infrastructure review across the University of Dundee.

Dr. Wayne Riggs has served as the dean pro tem, guiding the faculty through the interim period since Dean Robert Sindelar stepped down at the end of February 2013.

The Office of the Vice-President, Students has announced the winners of the 20112/13 UBC Student Development Awards. These awards recognize exceptional contributions or improvements to the student experience and learning environment at UBC.

On March 22, 2013, two faculty members and three graduate students from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC were inducted into the Delta Gamma Chapter of the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society. Established at UBC in 2010 by Dr. Robert Sindelar, the Delta Gamma Chapter is the only Canadian chapter of the society, which consists of 100 affiliate chapters in the United States. School of Community and Regional Planning student Aftab Erfan has been included as one of the top 25 storytellers in a competition given by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Research for a Better Life: The Storytellers challenge asked scholarship holders to report on the findings of their research in story form. Erfan’s submission was a large mural that she co-created with members of the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw First Nations.

In the next month, the 25 finalists will present their research stories in cities across Canada after which an overall winner will be chosen. For more information, click here.

The Vancouver architecture firms of Saucier + Perrotte Architectes and Hughes Condon Marler Architects have been awarded with a 2013 Design Excellence Award by the Ontario Association of Architects for their design of UBC’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences building. Winning projects were selected from over 170 submissions from across the globe by a jury of peers from within the design community. For more information, click here.

The UBC Faculty of Education in partnership with Full Circle First Nations Performance Society and the Chan Centre are hosting an evening of indigenous storytelling, song and dance. The program will celebrate people engaged in indigenous educational programs that exemplify traditional values, family, community, innovation, culture and language. Performances by new and seasoned indigenous performing artists include Louise Riel Métis Dancers, Christi Lee Charles, Russell Wallace & Tzo’kam, Zaccheus Jackson, Margo Kane and more.
