Dr. Subodh Verma (MSc’93, PhD’96), an alumnus of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC, is the recipient of 2013 Royal College Medal Award in Surgery. Presented annually to one Canadian surgeon, this award recognizes both Verma’s clinical achievements and research. To read more click here.
UBC Computer Science assistant professor Nick Harvey has been selected as a 2013 Alfred Sloan Research Fellow. The two-year fellowships seek to recognize the achievements of outstanding young scholars in science, mathematics, economics and computer science in Canada and the U.S. For more information, click here.
Stroke patients who lowered their systolic blood pressure below a certain threshold were significantly less likely to have a recurrent stroke caused by a brain bleed compared with those who didn’t lower their pressure that far, according to a study by Oscar Benavente, professor in UBC Division of Neurology and research director of the Stroke and Cerebrovascular Health Program at Vancouver Coastal Health. UBC Mechanical Engineering professor Peter Cripton’s research on concussions and spinal injury was featured in an article on the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s website titled “Putting Our Heads Together Safely.” The article describes the Pro-Neck-Tor™, the prototype sports helmet developed by Cripton and his team designed to prevent concussions and spinal injury resulting from head-first impact. The helmet is capable of preventing injuries in high-contact sports such as hockey and football. For more information, click here.
The Canadian Knowledge Translation Network (CDKTN) has launched the Dementia Knowledge Translation Learning Centre website, developed by UBC’s National Core for Neuroethics and the Clinic for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders. The site is a central resource designed to give dementia researchers key tools and skills for translating research results into knowledge that can be used by other researchers, physicians, policy-makers, and the public across Canada and beyond.
UBC alumna Genevieve Barrons has been selected as one of 39 new Gates Cambridge Scholars who will take up a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge, England, this fall. Barrons will pursue a master’s degree in education. She ran a summer camp and volunteered at a school working on education related projects in Malawi, and currently, she is working as an editor at a community newsletter in Shanghai. She is the eighth UBC student or alumnus to be awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship since the program began in 2001. For more on Barrons, click here.
Three engineering and business student teams from UBC’s New Venture Design course swept the podium at 2013 Enterprize Canada Business Plan Competition: Agile Monitoring Equipment (first), Aaisth (second), SoundIT (third) and T5 Analytics (fourth) advancing to the final round. Five teams participated in the final round to present their business plans to a panel of judges. The competition was part of Enterprise Canada’s Entrepreneurship Conference on February 8 –10 at the Sheraton Hotel in Vancouver. For more information, click here.
Experts from 33 countries will meet in Vancouver over four days to present the latest findings on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). For the last eight years, UBC Health Services, Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) has partnered with Canada FASD Research Network in the development of these international conferences.
