UBC English Prof. Sherrill Grace was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal at the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) reception on Jan.15. Grace has been a professor of English for over 30 years at McGill University and UBC. Most recently, she is the recipient of the Royal Society’s Lorne Pierce Medal, the Canada Council Killam Prize in the Humanities, and the Canada Council Killam Research Fellowship. As part of UBC’s Living Laboratory Initiative, the UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) community will pursue collaborations with industry to provide research opportunities for students and faculty, using the University’s physical infrastructure as a test bed for new ideas and a demonstration site for innovative technologies. ECE will hold a discussion on how students can get involved in this vital research. Presenters include ECE Prof. André Ivanov, ECE research associate Paul Lusina, Materials Engineering Prof. Steve Cockcroft, and ECE PhD candidates Mohamed Osama Ahmed and Sina Mashayekhi.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Canada has recognized Electrical and Computer Engineering professor Vijay Bhargava‘s sustained and distinguished service by awarding him the 2012 IEEE Canada W.S. Read Outstanding Service Gold Medal. A Fellow of the IEEE, the Royal Society of Canada, the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada, Bhargava’s teaching, research and service to the profession have been recognized through various awards, including IEEE Canada’s Outstanding Engineering Educator Award in 2010. UBC will be hosting the 2013 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR), an annual engineering competition held each winter at a Canadian university. This year, 23 teams of over 400 engineering students from across the country will compete, including members from UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. To compete in GNCTR, each team must build a toboggan with a concrete running surface that can carry up to five teammates down a hill. Teams will compete to win shortest race time, best overall design, best team spirit, and best overall team. Races will take place Jan. 25 at Mount Seymour. For more info, click here.
“The Métis of the Northwest: Finding Justice for an Invisible People” lecture honours the memory of Marlee Gayle Kline, a member of UBC Faculty of Law from 1989. Her work on feminist legal theory and critical race theory, child welfare law and policy, law’s continued colonialism, and restructuring of the social welfare state is internationally acclaimed. This lecture not only recognizes her rich contribution to the law school community but also reflects her belief in the central role social justice concerns must play in legal education and law.
