Film produced by UBC student goes to Sundance

Cari Green, an MFA student in UBC’s Film Production program, has associate produced When I Walk, a documentary that will premiere at next week’s Sundance Film Festival. It tells the story of filmmaker and artist Jason DaSilva (director), who finds out he has a severe form of multiple sclerosis at the age of 25. The film shares DaSilva’s personal and grueling journey over seven years in several cities, including Vancouver and New York.

Green is an award-winning film and television producer with more than twenty-five years’ experience and has produced or co-produced the works of renowned filmmakers, including The Corporation. She has taught at the Vancouver Film School since 2006 and served on many executive and board positions, including with Hot Docs and DOXA. Her thesis film is a drama about the mistreatment of gays in the military. For more information, click here.

UBC alumnus to receive Academy Award

UBC alumnus Doug James (now a professor at Cornell University) will receive an Academy Award for technical achievement. James received his Ph.D. (2001) at UBC in Applied Mathematics and continued as a post doc in Computer Science until the summer of 2002, when he started a faculty position at Carnegie Mellon University. Civil engineering professor appointed VP of Finance for the Canadian Geotechnical Society

Civil Engineering professor Dharma Wijewickreme has been appointed for a two-year term as the Vice-President Finance of the Canadian Geotechnical Society, effective January 1, 2013. The Canadian Geotechnical Society is the premier organization for geotechnical engineers and geoscientists in Canada and is dedicated to advancing knowledge and creating opportunities for the sharing of information by practitioners in a broad range of geotechnical disciplines. School of Nursing professor awarded Diamond Jubilee Medal

UBC Nursing Professor and CIHR Scientific Director of the Institute for Gender and Health, Joy Johnson, was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The commemorative medal marks the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne and honours the contributions and achievements by over 60,000 Canadians. 2013 TechTrek Saturday workshops

The 2013 TechTrek Saturday workshop program (Jan. 19, Feb. 9, March 9) brings grade 8-12 high school students and parents to campus for a half-day of computer science activities, including programming robots, learning to design programs and games, and listening to industry professionals and university experts talk about the cutting edge of technology in a fun, friendly environment complete with snacks. The UBC Alumni Achievement Awards, held in November each year honouring the best and brightest, is currently accepting nominations for the 2013 awards. Supporting thinking that will change the world by recognizing outstanding graduates and other members of the UBC community, this evening of celebration is held at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, and provides an opportunity for recipients to be honored by their peers and provide members of the public.
