UBC's Remembrance Day Ceremony

UBC’s Remembrance Day ceremony is an opportunity for faculty, staff, students and members of the community to honour and remember those who served in times of war, military conflict and peace. The program will include short readings and remarks with music by the UBC Women’s Choir, the UBC Brass Quintet and the Zing! Children’s Choir. Members of the platform party include:

Applied Science researchers collaborate in Canada’s newest Centre of Excellence

UBC Civil Engineering Prof. Nemkumar Banthia has been appointed scientific director of the India-Canada Centre for Innovative Multidisciplinary Partnership to Accelerate Transformation and Sustainability (IC-IMPACTS), a collaboration between UBC, the University of Alberta, the University of Toronto and various public and private sector partners in Canada and India.

IC-IMPACTS will bring together a team of Canadian and Indian researchers, industry representatives, community leaders, not-for-profit organizations and government agencies that will focus on three key areas: safe drinking water, reliable infrastructure, and effective prevention and treatment of water-borne and infectious diseases.

UBC School of Nursing’s Assoc. Prof. Susan Dahinten and researchers from Public Health Ontario will lead the application of public health strategies for IC-IMPACTS efforts in effective prevention and treatment of waterborne and infectious diseases in collaboration with the Public Health Foundation of India, Guru Nanak College of Nursing, and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences.

UBC professor named one of CFPC Family Physicians of the Year

Dr. Stanley Lubin, Dept. of Family Practice, UBC Faculty of Medicine, has been named one of The College of Family Physicians of Canada’s (CFPC) Family Physicians of the Year. UBC Landscape Architecture student wins Philip Tattersfield Scholarship

Master of Landscape Architecture student Nina Cicero has won the Philip Tattersfield Scholarship for 2012/13 for her essay “Over/Under and Beyond: New Life for the Overpass,” and will be featured in the December 2012 issue of Sitelines magazine.

Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture student Joshua Welsh received honourable mention for his essay, “The Salmon and the Squirrel: Expanding the Story of Green Infrastructure.”

Engineering student speaks at Humboldt Colloquium

UBC Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) PhD student Yazan Boshmaf was selected to speak as an Early Career Researcher at the Humboldt Colloquium in Toronto. His presentation, titled “Security Analysis of Social Bots on the Web,” discussed his research in social network security. Book launch: Visualizing Climate Change

An event will be held to launch Prof. Stephen Sheppard’s book Visualizing Climate Change: A Guide to Visual Communication of Climate Change and Developing Local Solutions, a review of climate change impacts and best practices in community sustainability. His book outlines tools for communicating climate science and future scenarios visually, from computer-generated images and interactive maps to videogames. The launch will feature demonstrations of visualization techniques to engage and mobilize communities on climate action.

Sheppard, director of UBC’s Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning, led the Future Delta project, a videogame created by UBC researchers to help the citizens of Delta, B.C. reduce their carbon footprint and prepare for climate change, including major flooding risks related to global warming.

Building Operations holds Fleet and Inventory Open House

UBC Building Operations recently partnered with Automotive Resources International (ARI) to conduct a complete analysis of the current fleet and provide a project plan to support UBC’s fleet greening initiative. 

The Building Operations Operational Effectiveness Group invites the community to their Fleet and Inventory open house to showcase the new vehicle models which initiates the transformation of their fleet.  This event will be an opportunity to meet with their strategic industry partners ARI (fleet management) and Weber Supply (maintenance, repair, operating and production).

CiTR 101.9 FM celebrates 75 years of radio

UBC’s Student Radio Society – CiTR 101.9 FM – is launching a year of birthday celebrations to commemorate 75 years of campus and community radio excellence, 30 years on the FM dial and 30 years of Discorder magazine. Alumni and the public are invited to attend a series of kick-off events from November 16-17, culminating in a public showcase of bands and exhibits at CiTR’s Diamond Radioversary Party on November 17 at Chapel Arts.

SALA Fall Lecture Series: Bill Pechet, Hallucinating in Public

Bill Pechet, lecturer in UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA), will give a talk titled Hallucinating in Public, co-sponsored by Museum of Vancouver.

His current work includes large artwork for the City of Winnipeg, two cemeteries in B.C., and street infrastructures for Vancouver and West Vancouver. Along with Stephanie Robb, Pechet represented Canada in the 2006 Venice Biennale of Architecture with a critique of leisure culture called SweaterLodge.
