The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Forestry is offering the world’s largest scholarship for forestry research to attract top doctoral students.
The Future Forests Fellowship will provide a PhD student with up to $240,000 — $60,000 annually for up to four years — to investigate some of the most pressing issues facing B.C.’s forests.
The fellowship will support research focused on British Columbia in the areas of forest products biotechnology or bioenergy, forest genetics, climate change and advanced landscape planning, river and landscape ecology, below-ground ecology, forest management, or business operations and management.
“The Future Forests Fellowship is a cornerstone in our goal of attracting the world’s top forestry students to study and conduct research at UBC,” said Cindy Prescott, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Forestry. “The fellowship provides a fantastic opportunity for an exceptional young scholar to learn from and work with some of the word’s top experts in these fields. The Future Forests Fellowship is an important recognition of the vital role that Canada’s forests play in the world.”
The new fellowship is made possible through the support of a private foundation and forms part of the start an evolution* campaign. Students beginning a doctoral studies program with the Faculty of Forestry in 2013 are eligible to apply. The recipient of the fellowship will be announced later this fall.
Currently more than 700 undergraduate students and 245 graduate students are enrolled in UBC’s Faculty of Forestry. The Faculty continues to see growth in its enrolment.
