New director for UBC School of Nursing

Prof. Suzanne H. Campbell has been named director of the UBC School of Nursing, effective July 9, 2012– June 30, 2017. She comes to UBC from Fairfield University School of Nursing in Connecticut, where she recently served terms as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and as interim dean.

Rio Tinto Alcan renews research support for Chair

Aluminum giant Rio Tinto Alcan has renewed its research support for the Chair in Materials Process Engineering, currently held by Materials Engineering professor and department head Warren Poole, with grant-in-aid support of $335,000 over five years. UBC Engineering robot competitions

At the International Autonomous Robot Racing Competition (IARRC), held at UBC, small-scale vehicles the size of a remote control car will use artificial intelligence to race against each other without human control. IARRC gives students a hands-on opportunity and promotes research in autonomous automotive technology.

At the 12th annual Engineering Physics 253 competition, 60 second-year students will go head-to-head with their autonomous block-stacking robots. Each year students spend six weeks to learn basic elements of electromechanical design, and then form teams of four on seven weeks of full-time robot design and construction. The course culminates in a publicly attended robot competition that also serves as their final exam. Past competitions have included one-on-one hockey, volleyball, and search and rescue challenges.

Family Day at Blueberry Fest

Family Day this Saturday at Blueberry Fest will offer free face painting and balloon art, a craft table by Kids Help Phone, a pie eating contest and live music by Fiddle Stix.
