Visuals: Teams of autonomous robots compete on an indoor field
Robot soccer teams get their game on when the UBC Thunderbots compete against Germany, China and others in the first-ever RoboCup Open held in Canada.
Each team has five robots playing soccer on an indoor field with no direct human control. Using student-developed artificial intelligence software and electromechanical hardware, these autonomous robots are able to adapt to various soccer plays and maneuvers.
This event stems from the international competition called RoboCup, one of the most well-known robotics competitions in the world. Held this year in Mexico City during June 18-24, RoboCup will attract over 3,000 researchers and students from more than 40 countries.
Following the North American Open at UBC, the teams will travel to Mexico for the world finals, where the UBC Thunderbots will represent Canada.
The UBC Thunderbots team is also hosting a conference that allows teams to engage with industry partners and the UBC community. Workshops and lectures will support international networking and research.
