With more than 60 events, attractions and tours to choose from, Alumni Weekend 2012 celebrates the best of UBC. Learn to DJ. Watch a puppet show with your kids. Attend sessions about crowdsourcing, wine appreciation or astrophysics. Take a tour of UBC’s new “green” building. Drop by a beer garden. Participate in a dialogue about fighting in hockey. Reunite with old friends.

Anyone can register for and attend Alumni Weekend. Some of the programming is aimed predominantly at UBC alumni, but Alumni Weekend offers something for everybody.

Campus and Community Planning presents a panel discussion on May 26 as part of Alumni Weekend to discuss housing affordability in Vancouver and what strategies can be adopted to help address this issue.

The panel will examine UBC’s Housing Action Plan and present some of the academic research being conducted at UBC on this topic. A municipal expert will talk about why housing is an issue in Vancouver and what cities can do to help find solutions for this growing problem.

The panel consists of Asst. Prof. Tom Davidoff, Sauder School of Business; Kera McArthur, Director of Public Engagement, UBC Campus and Community Planning; and Tim Wake, CEO, Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver.

Everyone is welcome at “Who’s There” — a celebration of the charismatic teacher who taught Theatre 100 to generations of UBC students, Dr. Peter Loeffler.

Featuring alumni and current students, this hour of theatrical shorts will showcase avant garde theatre, followed by a party in the Frederic Wood Theatre.

Peter Loeffler began teaching at UBC in 1972 and was a dedicated mentor for countless students from all specialties within the Department of Theatre. He passed away in 2002 after a short battle with cancer.

“Who’s There” is presented as part of UBC Alumni Weekend (see the day’s events at www.alumni.ubc.ca/events/alumniweekend). All proceeds go towards the Peter Loeffler Memorial Prize in Theatre.

A number of UBC Engineering co-op students are still available for hire this summer. There currently are co-op students working all over campus — working with the Brain Behaviour Lab in the Faculty of Medicine assisting with matlab and labview programming for EEG-based research, conducting data analysis and database design/optimization in the Sauder School of Business, and completing experiments and computational work for particle research in the Mathematics department.
 
UBC Engineering co-op students are available each January, May and September, for four or eight months. Many of the students are NSERC eligible for undergrads and MITACS eligible at the master’s level.
