Event: Students from the Surrey School District, graduate students from SFU and UBC, and a delegation of international graduate students will paint a community mural
Date/Time: 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., Thursday, April 12
Location: SFU Surrey Foyer, Surrey City Centre
250-13450 102 Avenue, Surrey, B.C.
Media are invited to the public painting of a mural for the Surrey: Take it to the Wall youth mural project. The goal of the project is to engage youth to contribute to and take pride in their community.
Groups of local high school students, graduate students from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, and international graduate students attending the American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual meeting in Vancouver, will paint the eight aluminum panels that will form a mural 64-feet in length.
Surrey secondary students participated in five artist-led workshops where they learned about art and discussed issues of racism and discrimination. Mural artist Michelle Loughery worked with the students to develop and design the mural.
Once the mural is completed, the Surrey Parks, Recreation and Culture department will determine a public location where it will be installed.
Graduate students from UBC’s Faculty of Education have been involved in the coordination of the youth mural project.
