UBC electrical engineers elected Fellows

André Ivanov, head of the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will be inducted a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for his contributions to engineering in Canada. Ivanov is an expert and innovator in the field of the design and testing of very large scale integrated (VLSI) circuits. His achievements have led to numerous new and advanced technologies that have greatly impacted the shape of VLSI test technology processes worldwide affecting the entire semiconductor industry.

Prof. Robert Schober of Electrical and Computer Engineering was elected Fellow for his contributions to the field of wireless communication. In particular, he has made several pioneering contributions to the theory, design and application of signal detection in fast fading channels, space-time coding, widely-linear processing and ultra-wideband signaling.

Established in 1887, the EIC is Canada’s federation of engineering societies committed to engineering for a prosperous, safe and renewable Canada.

New UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences building wins Canadian Architect Award of Excellence

The new UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences Building, set to open in fall 2012, has won a Canadian Architect Award of Excellence. Given annually since 1968, this award recognizes excellence in architectural design and “significant building projects in Canada.” In their award citation, the jury praises the building’s “unique architectural form,” recognizing “the exchange of knowledge” as the driving factor behind the design.

MTRL’s own “Best Picture” winners 2011

Students in the fourth-year class of Dept. of Materials Engineering (MTRL) 451, Microstructural Analysis Lab, have been applying techniques using the department’s electron microscope lab. A class competition produced excellent images and two winners. First place was awarded to ″Black and white” by Team Rocket; second place went to “Frozen” by Group B2.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation, Dialogues at UBC Robson Square

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and UBC present four public talks in the areas of brain health, regenerative building design, child development and quantum computing in Canada Foundation for Innovation, Dialogues at UBC Robson Square.

In “Frontiers in brain imaging: Picturing what makes us human”, Dr. Alan Evans, Dept. of Neurology and Neurosurgery, McGill University, will offer his perspective on why brain research matters to Canadians and how his work with C-brain — a telecommunications-enabled effort to map the brain of Canadians — is revolutionizing our understanding of the human experience. Evans and his team are leading the global race to use the latest technologies in brain imaging to diagnose, treat and research brain conditions. UBC’s Jon Stoessl, Division Head of Neurology, will give the introduction.

UBC to co-host 2012 Golden Key Canadian Regional Summit

The UBC and SFU Golden Key chapters will host the 2012 Golden Key Canadian Regional Summit. This private academic conference, held at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue from Feb. 3 – to 5, is hosted annually for Golden Key members who study at post-secondary schools throughout Canada.

Featuring 14 guests and speakers, this conference will allow students the opportunity to learn from industry experts and to network with other members. Workshops and interactive sessions will be on a variety of topics including scientific research, social media and public relations, business, community involvement and technology.

This year’s summit will feature keynote speaker Brian Wong, a UBC alumnus, who was recently lauded in Mashable as one of “The Top 5 Young Entrepreneurs to Watch.”

Golden Key International Honor Society is a collegiate honour society recognizing outstanding academic achievement and connecting individuals locally, regionally and globally.

Problem Child & the End of Civilization

UBC’s Dept. of Theatre and Film will offer the public a preview, a free working rehearsal of its upcoming production, Problem Child & The End of Civilization.

Date: Jan. 25
Time: 5 p.m.
Place: Near the Stir It Up Café in Buchanan Block A

These two one-act plays penned by George F. Walker set to premiere on Feb. 9 at the Chan Centre will be previewed and discussed by members of its cast and crew. Both plays are part of Walker’s gritty Suburban Motel series, a series of six dark yet tender plays that take place in the same hotel room.
