International students who cannot make it home for the holidays will still enjoy a home-cooked meal and a community celebration at UBC’s annual Christmas dinner. Approximately 120 students will be treated to a traditional turkey dinner and dessert, a visit from Santa, and a round of Christmas carols.
“We want to provide a very warm and a very Canadian feast for those who may be a long way from their families,” says Michelle Suderman, associate director at International House.
The campus community comes together and donates their time to make this event possible. Volunteers include UBC staff, students, and community members such as the UBC RCMP detachment who decorate, cook and serve food to students.
International House will be partnering with Quest Food Exchange for the event this year, the largest not-for-profit organization of its kind in British Columbia that enables individuals and families to access a variety of healthy, affordable food. Other long-time sponsors include University Neighbourhoods Association, Save on Foods, The Well Cafe, the UBC Graduate Student Society and Association of Administrative and Professional Staff.
This is the 17th year that the UBC Chaplains have organized this event in collaboration with International Student Development & Student Housing & Hospitality Services. Students pay $5 to help defray costs.
