Asia Pacific Memos examine impact of Xinhai Revolution

The worldwide commemoration of the centennial of the Xinhai Revolution, which ended China’s Qing dynasty and founded a republican China, starts this October. A series of Memos examines the impact of the revolution and its aftermath on China and its neighbours:

UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences appoints Kevin Letchford assistant professor

The UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences announces the appointment of Kevin Letchford to the position of Assistant Professor, part-time (non-tenure track). Letchford earned his BSc (Chem) and BSc (Pharm) at UBC and practiced as a community pharmacist in Kelowna, BC before returning to UBC to complete his PhD under the direction of Helen Burt.

Letchford has extensive teaching experience with the Professional Practice Lab as a graduate teaching assistant, pharmacist instructor and as a guest lecturer in undergraduate and graduate pharmaceutics/drug delivery courses.

New book on Cascadia subduction zone features UBC professor

Prof. Barbara Lence, a faculty member of the UBC Civil Engineering department, is among the scientists and engineers featured in Cascadia’s Fault, a new book about the Cascadia subduction zone.

This hidden crack in the floor of the Pacific Ocean, running from Vancouver Island to northern California, is the tectonic boundary between two plates of the Earth’s crust that are crashing together. Cascadia’s fault has ruptured from end-to-end (at magnitude 9 or higher) 19 times in the last 10,000 years.

UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences welcomes first expanded class

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences welcomed 224 incoming students on Sept. 9 as part of the Faculty’s annual White Coat Ceremony. This year’s expanded class represents an admission increase of 47 per cent over previous years. 

“Each year, we present students with a white coat and ask them to take a pledge of professionalism, both symbols of the commitment to exceptional patient-centred health care that our institution exemplifies,” said Robert Sindelar, dean of UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences.

International UBC staff volunteer program accepting 2012 applications until Oct. 7

UBC’s international volunteer program for staff, Leave for Change, is accepting applications for the 2012 program year until Oct. 7. Those interested in the program can download an application form at http://www.focusonpeople.ubc.ca/leave-for-change/ to apply by the deadline. 

Every year, UBC sends six staff members abroad on the Leave for Change program to volunteer in developing countries, sharing their knowledge and skills with others in an international setting. 

Together with international volunteer agency Uniterra, UBC works to provide successful applicants with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Volunteer positions are diverse and range from technology training to youth leadership. Placements are offered in Bolivia, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guatemala, Malawi, Nepal, Vietnam and more.

Celebrate Learning Week promotes teaching and learning at UBC

Celebrate Learning Week, held Oct. 29-Nov. 6, is a week-long showcase to celebrate teaching and learning across UBC Vancouver. Lectures, information sessions, poster sessions, student advising activities, workshops and other events will promote learning and development opportunities. Many of the events are free and open to UBC faculty, staff, students and the community.

UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture hosts discussion of future development

The UBC School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) is presenting Shift — a discussion on which paradigm shift will have the greatest positive effect on the development of our region — on Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at UBC Robson Square. 

The panel includes UBC professors Patrick Condon and Bill Pechet and will be moderated by David Beers, founding editor of The Tyee. Noted designers, developers, planners, artists, journalists and politicians are expected to participate.

Smart Business, Small Business: speaker event

The Small Business Accelerator (SBA), an initiative of UBC’s Irving K. Barber Learning Centre, celebrates Business Development Bank of Canada’s Small Business Week on Oct. 17 at 5:30pm with two speakers: Paul Cubbon, a marketing instructor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, and George Moen, a UBC alumnus, serial entrepreneur and president of Blenz, the Canadian coffee company.

Emeritus professor presents lecture on King James Bible

Prof. R. Gerald Hobbs, emeritus professor of Church History & Music at the Vancouver School of Theology, is presenting “An Eighty-Year journey: The Making of the King James Bible” on Oct. 3 at noon in the Dodson Room of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.

The event is held in conjunction with The 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible 1611-2011,” an exhibition at UBC Library’s Rare Books and Special Collections division, located on the lower level of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre.
