The University of British Columbia’s MBA program ranks second in Canada and 24th among the “Top 100 MBAs” in the world in the recently released 2011-2012 Beyond Grey Pinstripes ranking, a biennial survey that evaluates leadership on social, environmental and ethical issues.
Offered through the Robert H. Lee Graduate School at the Sauder School of Business, the MBA program made great gains in the ranking, moving up from 49th in 2009. The U.S.-based Aspen Institute lauded schools like Sauder for preparing MBA students for the complexities of today’s business environment and commended their offerings in the area of social enterprise, which seeks societal good along with financial success.
Along with innovative curricula, Sauder’s faculty played a major role in pushing the school to its competitive ranking, placing sixth in the faculty research portion of the survey. Based on an analysis of citations from 2009 to 2010, Sauder faculty members proved to be among the world’s leading researchers focusing on areas such as natural resource management, the impact of recession, renewable energy and progressive entrepreneurship.
“Sauder is pleased to be recognized for the value we provide our students in addressing these important issues,” said Daniel Muzyka, dean of the Sauder School of Business. “We have always placed an emphasis on ethics and social responsibility in our MBA program and are happy to receive this acknowledgment of our continued efforts.”
The Aspen Institute analyzed submissions from 149 schools from 22 countries. This is the first survey by the institute since the global economic downturn to assess how MBA programs are helping students come to terms with the economic and social landscape facing business leaders today.
For top ranked schools like Sauder, noted areas of success include the adaptation of curricula to incorporate responsible decision-making, and the inclusion of courses with content touching on social, ethical and environmental issues.
