Pacific Affairs, an academic journal on contemporary Asia and the Pacific, is celebrating 50 years on the UBC campus. William Holland brought the journal to UBC in the spring of 1961 from New York, after he and his colleagues at the Institute of Pacific Relations were subjected to the purge of alleged communists by Senator Joseph McCarthy. Published for 84 consecutive years, Pacific Affairs is not only one of the most prestigious journals on Asia, but is the oldest journal of its kind.
As one of the few independently published scholarly journals, Pacific Affairs relies on subscription revenue and diminishing institutional support. The archives provide a first-hand account of how intellectuals made sense of such events as: World War II, the creation of Pakistan in 1949, the Korean War and the Cultural Revolution in China. Current articles cover topics such as the rise and limits of civil society in China, democracy and development in India, and environmental issues facing Asia and the Pacific today.
