Eleven university student teams from UBC, the University of Toronto, McMaster University, the University of Calgary and other institutions will showcase their latest advancements in the field of autonomous ground vehicle navigation and compete in challenging races.
Hosting the family friendly competition and exhibition is UBC Thunderbird Robotics, an interdisciplinary student organization in the Faculty of Applied Science.
This year marks the first time that the annual event is held in Western Canada. Also new this year is a robotics exhibition with displays from UBC engineering student teams and leaders in the robotics industry.
In the circuit race, unmanned robot vehicles must speed two a team down a 30-metre straight track and avoid hitting pylons on the side.
The drag race requires the robot vehicles to negotiate an outdoor obstacle course under a prescribed time while racing against other robots, obeying traffic rules and avoiding objects on the track.
