UBC Food Services residence chef wins award

UBC Food Services residence chef Steve Golob has been given the John McCormick Award by the Canadian Association of Foodservices Professionals (CAFP) in recognition of his excellence in the food service and hospitality industry. 

Golob was presented with the award on Feb. 8 at the 31st annual BC Leadership Night. He has worked as a chef with UBC Food Services since 1997..

UBC’s CiTR Radio and Vancouver’s Mint Records release compilation

UBC’s CiTR radio station has teamed up with Vancouver’s Mint Records to release the CiTR Pop Alliance Compilation: Vol 2, an 11-song collection of the city’s underground music acts.  All money raised from the compilation will go to CiTR. 

The limited-edition record will be released today at Vancouver’s Interurban Gallery.  Scratch Records will present a concert to celebrate the release, featuring performances by compilation artists Slam Dunk, Fine Mist, Fanshaw (UBC student Olivia Fetherstonhaugh), Shane Turner Overdrive, Role Mach and Spring Break (DJ set).

The compilation also features artists such as No Kids, Apollo Ghosts, and Watermelon.  A limited 200 vinyl copies will be sold at the event.

OS & OT presents “An Interactive Research Colloquium on Health and Occupation”

The Dept. of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy (OS & OT) presents six short talks given by researchers on contemporary studies to advance occupational therapy scholarship and the science of occupation. Each talk will include audience participation.

Dr. Larry Goldenberg, prostate cancer pioneer, at the Learning Centre

The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and Woodward Library present Dr. Larry Goldenberg, an award-winning UBC researcher, pioneer in the treatment of prostate cancer and world-renowned advocate of patient education. He authored one of the first books to explain prostate cancer treatment options in layman’s terms.

Goldenberg, director of the Vancouver Prostate Centre and head of the Department of Urologic Sciences at UBC, will talk about his research and new developments.

Clean Energy Research Centre Seminar Series

UBC Clean Energy Research Centre will host Milind Kandlikar and his talk: The Co-Benefits of Local Air Quality Improvement and Climate Change Mitigation in the Developing World.

Kandlikar is an associate professor jointly appointed in the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability and the Liu Institute for Global Research at UBC. An engineer by training, his work now focuses on the intersection of technology innovation, human development and the global environment.

Green College hosts talk on role of academics and researchers in public policy

Dr. Amir Attaran, Canada Research chair in law, population health and global development policy, will be speaking at Green College about the role of academics and researchers in public policy . His talk will focus on how academic freedoms can allow professors to be vocal outside of the academic sphere and advocate for human rights litigation, improvements in public health policy, and changes to laws of war via the media.

CiTR Radio Prof Talk interviews Dr. Pascal Lavoie, clinical assistant professor

On UBC CiTR Radio’s Prof Talk, with host Farha Khan, Dr. Pascal Lavoie, from the Division of Neonatology, will discuss some of his recent research on protecting premature babies who become sick from infections or other diseases after birth as well provide an overview of the clinical field of neonatology.
