Talk: Behind the scenes at Nature

Nicola Jones, previous online news editor, now an op-ed editor for Nature, talks about the behind-the scenes activities of the scientific journal – how the magazine commissions, reviews, edits and publishes everything from research papers through the opinion section to the news, how it is adapting to new media, and its role in dealing with hot science papers and scandals, from faked stem cell lines through to ‘climategate’ and more. Discussion and questions to follow.

Colloquium: Perspectives on science and the changing media landscape

A discussion about how scientists and the media interact, particularly over hot issues like climate change. A panel will give short presentations, followed by lengthy discussion. The panelists are:Simon Donner, assistant professor of climatology, Dept. of Geography; Candis Callison, assistant professor, School of Journalism; and Nicola Jones, science journalist in Residence at School of Journalism and commissioning editor for the ‘comment’ section of Nature, and freelance reporter.
