UBC wine researcher among Globe and Mail’s 45 Canadians changing the world

The Globe and Mail recently profiled 45 extraordinary Canadians making their mark in dozens of fields. Hennie van Vuuren, the director of the Wine Research Centre at UBC, is a specialist in yeast and has a PhD in brewing beer. He created a yeast that doesn’t make compounds like histamines that form during fermentation and which give some wine drinkers headaches.

Also featured was Bing Thom, a Vancouver-based architect and planner, who is celebrated for designing the new Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. Thom studied architecture at UBC and the University of California. He started his own firm in 1982 and designed the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC.
