Between Wednesday Nov. 24 and Friday Nov. 26, more than 2,000 UBC undergraduate and graduate degrees from all 12 Vancouver faculties will be conferred.
On Thursday, Nov. 25, astronaut Julie Payette will receive an honorary degree from UBC. Payette served as Chief Astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency from 2000 to 2007 and has spent more than 25 days in space. She flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1999, making aerospace history as the first Canadian to participate in an International Space Station mission, and she flew in the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2009.
On Friday, Nov. 26, mathematician Louis Nirenberg will also receive an honorary degree. Nirenberg, who was born in Hamilton and grew up in Montreal, was the former director and professor of mathematics at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He has made major contributions in the area of partial differential equations and he has inspired generations of mathematicians.
