Today the federal government launched an independent expert panel to solicit the advice of Canadians and business leaders on how the federal government can cultivate its support of business research and development.
UBC applauds the federal government for the clear parameters it has set for the federal R & D review examining how government stimulates greater convergence of private sector interests and R & D support. UBC also applauds the government’s selection of an eminent panel of experts to lead this review. The government has chosen individuals intimately acquainted with the many facets of the innovation environment in Canada.
It is particularly heartening that the government has acknowledged the professionalism and the rigor of the nation’s three granting councils (SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR) – the councils’ support of basic research provides the true building blocks of a healthy innovation environment.
UBC looks forward to working with the secretariat, panel members, government officials and partners in the private sector to contribute in a meaningful way to this review.
This process is an opportunity to re-imagine how the private sector and the research community can partner together to benefit all Canadians. UBC students, researchers and staff are encouraged to participate when and where they can in this important process.
